I haven't really watched the show, because I never see it on, so I can't comment on that. But I recently saw Hell Date, just for the hell of it, and I just shook my head.
A lot of people are always outraged because not enough African-Americans are represented to a wide amount on television. Some people say it's because the networks don't feel they would appeal to an audience. I beg to differ.
I think that someo people just DON'T know hot to promote good shows surrounding African-Americans. Flavor of Love and I love New York were hits....sadly, seeing as that probably wasn't the best light for black people. But regardless, they drew in a HUGE and diverse audience. Had these two shows been on BET, I'm willing to bet they wouldn't be hardly as big as they are now. Had Baldwin Hills been on VH1 or MTV, it would have been given more attention by both casters, producers, and an audience.
WHY?
BET is incapable of coming up with marketable shows, therefore the network itself is not marketable. So it basically runs in a circle. You rely on ridiculous shows to establish a name for a network, the network becomes ridiculous, and therefore no one will watch the network, regardless of what shows go on. And if BET so happens to pick up a show that is a real diamond in the rough, they are going to have to really promote it (another one of their not so strong suits) across other networks to draw viewers in.
BET is one of the strongest resources we have for African-Americans in television, and that's become disappointing.
