Baldwin Hills is not the black Bev Hills

Please! For any who live in Los Angeles know that strolling to Baldwin hills would not leave any to believe that they have stepped into a fancy neighborhood. I would say Ladera heights is nicer than Baldwin Hills.

Oh yeah and this show is horrible.

I have to agree with u. all they are is just upper middle class blacks, not weathly at all. BET stole MTV show "The Hills" even if they are actors and actors they aleast they need to look rich. Driving the latest Nissan Altima, Camry, or Accord does not make u rich. i understand that if your parents buy a brand new car for u, when u are a teenager, that is kinda of unheared of. but what type of vehicle they get u determines how rich u are. which is not always true. now when u say rich, u are pulling up to a 6 or 8 bedroom mansion. in your cadillac, bmw, infinti, volvo, land rover, lincoln, audi,or aston martin etc.
This show to me is kind of strange . but i don`t hate the show it is kind of interesting.

Actually it is the same, I lived in L.A for about 6 years, beverly hills is not glamorous, maby on t.v. but if anyone of you visit there randomly it will not look the same.......I also visit laguna beach, it's nice but it looks better on t.v. than in person. I mean if you have not been to these places there's no reason for you to comment.

who ever said baldwin hills is not that nice they dont know baldwin hills and yes they have 6-7 bedroom homes and they drive bentlys every in beverly hills isnt rich a lot of them just bought when it was cheap dont be fooled by tv

reply

I COMPLETELY agree. "Baldwin Hills" is just a nicer part of South Central, but the true black Beverly Hills is Ladera Heights. Anyone who lives in L.A. should know this.

Here are the best "black" L.A. neighborhoods:
1] LADERA HEIGHTS
2] VIEW PARK-WINDSOR HILLS
3] CARSON (CA)
4] BALDWIN HILLS

Part of this is filmed in Ladera...If you look at Vanessa Bell Calloways (Ashley's) house that is in Ladera.

ROTFLMAO @ BertR putting Carson above Baldwin Hills.

To the poster who said something about Baldwin Hills being South Central, you're an idiot. There is a big difference between South L.A. and South Central L.A. The homes in Baldwin Hills are very expensive, the neighborhood is exclusive and a lot of the people who live there are professional, established people OF MEANS.

I love the comments about driving the latest Camry or Altima "proving" you are not rich. Clearly, there are a lot of children on this site. There was a story published a year or so ago online that showed the 20 richest people in the world. Of those 20 people, MAYBE 5 of them drove cars that YOU would consider a "luxury" car. The rest of that list, Bill Gates included, drive Nissans, Hondas and Toyotas. Do you think Bill Gates isn't "rich?" You're right, he's not rich, he's WEALTHY. Learn the difference.

Lol @ "Laguna Beach" comparisons. Orange County has the highest foreclosure rate in Southern California. If white people are so "rich" or "wealthy," why aren't they paying their mortgages and why are they losing their homes? A few major mortgage lenders were based in the O.C., New Century being one of them, and it folded like a thin sheet of paper. So much for rich.

What you may not know is that a lot of the white kids whose parents "buy" them cars for their 16th birthday are driving leased vehicles. Those kids are oftentimes getting cars that are being financed by daddy's business and are being written off for tax purposes. Anything white folks can do to prevent from paying taxes, they do. I bet that the majority of the kids on "Laguna Beach" who have cars do not own their cars outright nor are the cars in the kids' names. (Ex.: "Real Housewives of O.C." Tammy's daughter's BMW was repossessed after her dad died when his Thai wife refused to pay her car note. She ended up buying/leasing her own Audi.)

You can talk/type whatever stupidity you want, but how many of the kids' parents have you seen on "The Hills" or "Laguna Beach" vs. the kids' parents on "Baldwin Hills?" White people give their kids cars because they are too busy working to drop their kids off at school and pick them up. Black people make their kids earn what they get because there is a double standard in this country when it comes to Black v. white.

When some of the people on this board mature, they will realize how shallow, superficial and flat out stupid their comments are.

That was an awesome reply shopalot, I don't know much about these areas but you're the only one who approached this issue with intelligence (and not to mention actual FACTS), and expressed your ideas eloquently, and for that I applaud you.

reply

Very well put shopalot.

Shopalot.....I co-sign

reply

Are you kidding me shopalot?!! Again with this black vs. white thing. Hello, not ALL white parents are what you 'claim' to be. My white mother and stepfather never had once brought me a leased vehicle NOR brought me that car because they were too busy for me, again with the stupid double standard that some black people love to talk out of the mouths. Your comments were just as shallow, superfical, and especially flat out stupid. Stop playing the race card for crying out loud, those kids in Baldwin Hills aren't rich, like one poster said on this board, they should have done a show about rich black teens in ATL.

Thank you for being a friend Estelle!

I agree. No offense When I started watching this show I was like what's so special about Baldwin Hills??? I'm black and a live in a bigger house than any of those showcased in the show.I've seen a lot of other black families who live in nicer neigborhoods, not trying to be ignorant...Maybe cause that's what I'm exposed too i dunno then again I live on the east coast so maybe things are differnt out here lol. There are a lot of college educated black middle class professionals but that doesn't mean they are millionaires. It' a regular lifestyle that is attainable for all! education will take you far

reply

I too agree with Shopalot. First of all, for the people who put all of those areas(Carson, View Park, and Ladera Heights) in front of Baldwin Hills, you're out of your minds. First of all, Carson has way more white people than African Americans, so why not put that in the same category as Beverly Hills? View Park- Windsor Hills is full of apartments and maybe a hand full of nice houses, there are many things about that neighborhood that need to be changed before you consider that being better than Baldwin Hills. And as for Ladera Heights, because I used to live in that area, I know that it is very nice, but it is not better than Baldwin Hills, which is actually where I live now. No one said that every child on Baldwin Hills was filthy rich, and no one expects them to be, it is a reality show about the teenagers in that area, even though I believe scripts may be involved lol.

Long Live Baldwin Hills!
Cheers.

Yet, again BET has copied another popular mtv show. The show tries to play off like laguna beach but with black people but it's not. THe first season basicly introduces the castmembers personalites and their problems. The second season just plays on its own rules. THe main character the "Lauren" of the show Staci is dating a dude who looks at least 27, lives with his mom, has a child, and from the looks of it no steady employment. She has also moved into an apartment with him and is now caring his child before she can get into school and can claim meidicaid for herself.ok! Then there are two other guys one has gotten in trouble with the law and the other had gotten a girl pregnant and then she had gotten an abortion.wtf Then there is the other castmembers with their assorted problems like "does he like me or not" and "why is he talking her and not me" kind of crap. I thought this suppose to be a show about showcasing positive Black kids that live in luxury and their menial barbie doll like problems. Instead all im seeing is just morbidity of the main character and her comrades. I mean im not saying Laguna Beach was better I didnt see the first season but the second one and it gotten canceled and went to another location. The whole follow rich kids around gotten old after Laguna beach that is why the second season and that maui fever show got the axe after 13 episodes. But BET had to copy and bring us Baldwin Hills where it contradicts everything the show suppose to be on.Are we suppose to envy these rich kids my goodness the show is like a gothic novel. Another thing like someone had mentioned their houses are not all that and the whole landscape of the area just look so bland. Goodness, one episode the girls were just walking around at a local mall. I mean why not go and enjoy the outdoors at a nice shopping boutique if you are so wealthy instead of walking in a dimly litted mall. Im not wealthy and ive seen better homes and gardens(no pun intented) in my area than Baldwin hills. The caption of the show says "Your dreams is their reality" well, I dont know what dream they are tallking about cause it looks like a nightmare.

I really don't know that much about Beverly hills and all that except for what I have seen on tv because I live in Norcal and rarely go over there...but I do have to say that I thought I would be envious of these people and their houses and cars becaue they lived in Baldwin hills. But....I'm not! I'm not trying to say that these people don't have money because they do but they don't nearly have as much as I thought they would. Don't get me wrong I LOVE this show and its great to see blacks portrayed in another light but all the same...they really don't seem THAT rich to me. When I was watching I would be going through and looking at peoples house and their kitchens and I would be *beep* my kitchen looks nicer than that. I have a mercedes benez and bmw in my garage right now. My grandparents are retired and still make over 130,000 dollars a year. There is NOTHING wrong with being upper middle class--especially with how horrible the economy is right now but I just didn't like how they portrayed it is as if these kids were ridiculously rich...or maybe they didn't say that and I just assumed they were... I realize the area they live in is extremely expensive with houses starting off at over 1 million dollars but the houses themselves are really just medicore from what I've seen..yeah the area is nice but the houses...eh. Plus if im not mistaken they said they weren't that far from the bad areas...I don't know. Maybe they spend all their cash on summer homes, or vacations but from what I've seen they're not all that rich. Not that it matters, they are upper middle class and holding their own. Maybe I can't say until I go to Baldwin hills but this is just MY opinon.

reply

Wow, you people are ignorant. I find it funny that some of you claim to live in SoCal, and don't even know why it's referred to as the "Black Beverly Hills". It has nothing to do with being "super rich", and everything to do with the number of black celebrities that live (or lived) in Baldwin Hills. The show never claimed these kids were super rich; if you REALLY watched the show you would have caught on to that.

BET isn't copying MTV, they are both owned by the same company.

reply

In my original post I never claimed they were implying the kids were rich but I live in LA and I have frineds in all areas and Baldwin Hills is definitely NOT in ANYWAY like Beverly hills. I would say Ladera would be more so because of the neighborhoods and the homes. I'm not talking about having about money but the feeling of Beverly hills is certainly not the same when you hang out in Baldwin hills. It's a joke to make that comparison.

reply

so?

reply

What?

reply

I don't think someone's wealth can be simply measured by what kind of cars they drive or what kind of houses they live in, that's just ridiculous. A lot of rich people do not like to flaunt their wealth, it's tacky in my opinion. Driving a BMW or Mercedes...there's something very new money about that.
The kids of on this show, they go to private schools which cost over $20,000 a year on top on living where they live and shopping where they shop etc.
People watch the hills and Laguna beach and think that's how all rich people should live like. Let me tell you something, the cars those kids drove on were bought by MTV for the duration of their contracts. Did you see Kristin and Lo's house? They weren't all that, the kids on Baldwin Hills have better houses. The only reason people think rich kids should have big houses is because the main character Lauren lived in a huge house but obviously her dad is an architect so it wouldn't make sense for her to have a *beep* house.

reply

the wealth of the families in Laguna is much greater than those in Baldwin Hills. Forget the million dollar homes in Laguna, they have to pay taxes on those homes which is crazy expensive as well. That's not to say that there aren't nice home in baldwin hills but they certainly aren't as well off as those in Laguna. That's just the way the real estate is out here. Laguna in GENERAL is known for being a more expensive area to live, period.

reply

Are you people serious?
Comparing Baldwin Hills to Beverly Hills? LMAOOOO ROFLLLL Seriously hahahahaha

Now don't get me wrong. The homes in Baldwin look really nice, but compared to Homes in beverly Hills? Thats just idiocy.

Take a look at the two.

Baldwin Hills: Need I remind you, most of the cast members don't even own Homes as big as these.

Beverly Hills

Most Beverly Hills Homes Cost over 5 mill

where in Baldwin Hills, the biggest homes may go for about 1-2.5 As you could see, total difference.
