AGE DIFFERENCE-- hello?!!?

ANyone else find it bizarre to see Zooey playing opposite Jim? I mean he's like 25 years older than her! She should have been dating Jim Carrey's young friend. Why did they cast him as if he was 30? Totally bizarre.

It's obvious to me all the posts about the age difference are most likely from young(er) people (teens-20s). I find this ironic since young people are usually more open, liberal about these kinds of issues?

As someone who is A) Over the median age of who goes to the movies anymore, and B) Also older than most of the IMDB posters... The age difference between Zooey and Jim isn't that shocking. It is very common for older men to be with younger women. It's as old as time to coin a cliche.

In fact, why is this such a big deal considering Cougars (Women in their 40s dating men in their 20s) are all the rage now? Why is there all of a sudden a double standard for older men and younger women? When did the P.C. police make this asinine pronouncement?

reply

I don't see how there's a big fuss about it. She's legal, he's legal. Seems fine to me, and I'm a younger person.

I don't poly-cotton to coping tropes, even my own.

This issue just falls in line w/ how some folks WILL find things to be bothered about. I didn't think Jim looked THAT much older than Zooey. Its not as if she was 15 and he looked like Clint Eastwood! lol
At the end of the day its all about appearances, and neither looked inappropriate playing opposite the other.

reply

I totally agree!! That's all I kept thinking the entire movie. He is 18 years older than her, btw. He is 47, she is 29 - according to birthdates on IMDB. I know it isn't that big o' deal, but there are other comedic actors that are a bit closer to Zooey's age!!

Well isn't that just the pickle on the giant crap sandwich that is my day.

It didn't occur to me at all during this movie. Not once.

Yeah, me neither. Didn't notice it at all.

Stupid subject. Get over it.

It occurred to me in Eternal Sunshine but not in this movie.

It didn't occur to me either cause Jim looks like he's friggin' 35! And to say their are other actors closer to Zooey's age was weird. Cause if anyone was gonna be replaced, it would be Zooey. It's Jim's movie.Plus, their character's had A LOT in common, made each other laugh, loved each other & had fun together. In the end, that's all that matters. :)GET. AWAY. "MY BUSINESS IS TO CREATE"

Great points SonnyNStitch, my sentiments exactly, especially your 2nd paragraph.

reply

I think either she or him should have been someone else. The age difference was weird especially bc it wasn't addressed. It seemed like he was trying too hard to be cool with her. he definitely stuck out when he was standing next to her friends in the bar.

there's nothing wrong with the age difference, obviously, but it would come up in conversation.

Me neither! I Don't know what the big deal is.

Alot of people have said that having someone as young as Zooey enter the life of a middle aged man was used to illustrate some new, young and exciting come into his life. I forgot the term they called it but it's something movies do when young women who are fun, full of life and quirky, who are there to provide the mid life crisis man a sense of wonder and life changing. I'm pretty sure that's why they used someone so young. Didn't think it was a big deal though.

reply

Didn’t bother me either

reply

Like it matters at all! There's an 18 year age gap between my partner and I and we're completely happy :)

And let me guess... You are the younger one?

reply

Didn't notice the difference until the FBI took him at airport, thought she was pre-teen and he was screwed. But as it turned out, that wasn't the case.

Age gaps (legal age groups that is) are common people, get over it.

reply

@snowmanwilly (heheh...)
That was when it became pronounced for me also. From then onwards, at certain points, Jim Carey looked very old compared to her.

There is an 11yr age gap between my Fiance and I and I am the older one. Although you probably couldn't tell...not because she looks old...or that I look particularly young (although I have been told I DO look young for my age :) ) but because I can be an immature twit. But then so can she...so my entire post has been pointless. For this, I apologise. Sorry.

She may be 29 but she acted/had the maturity level of an 18 year old. I think that exaggerated the age gap which also stood out to me

reply

agreed, the actress may be 29 but her character (and her looks) was not.

reply

I think both characters played younger. Jim Carrey was doing many things that fourty year olds probably don't do, such as get into street brawls, dancing video games at bars, going to costume parties (especially as Harry Potter), etc. I definitely think she played a teenager and he played a mid-thirty something.

reply

I am watching it now and was thinking that it was an odd pairing as well. Not so much b/c it's a "big deal" that it's an older man and a younger woman since that's not all that uncommon - but I do agree w/who posted that they casted him as though he was 30 in this movie. In addition, I think it's hard to consider Jim and Zooey a convincing couple with real chemistry for me personally, at least. Perhaps b/c Jim has been around a long time where as Zooey has come into her own more recently. That being said, I don't think it would have made sense to cast an older woman in Zooey's role...but perhaps a younger actor in Jim's role (athough I did like him in this).

reply

Why must Zooey date an actor closer to her age? I would imagine she being over 18, and he being over 18 was all that was necessary. Get over your antiquated and conservative views.

reply

Jim Carry's face is definitely getting wrinkled. He was too old for the part, but he did barely manage to pull it off this time. But, he's starting to get too old for this kind of movie...

reply

yeah his face is getting wrinkled because you guessed it...he is getting older!!, i for one failed to notice the supposed age difference because it's not uncommon to see a late twenties girl nowadays looking for maturity and love in someone older when she fails to find it in her normal age group because they lack the life experience and maturity.

reply

[deleted]

I dare say he aged himself 6 to 7 years in the sticky tape scene!

reply

Um, who cares? It's a movie. It's not they are together in real life. Jim doesn't look like his 70 years old does he? No, he looks young. So why can't he play the part? She looks young and so does he. That's all that matters. It doesn't matter how old they are in real life because guess what? They aren't together in real life.

It's not all that uncommon for this type of thing to happen. As long as they look the part, there is nothing wrong with it.

reply

I did set construction on this movie We actually filmed a joke "alternate ending "to release on the special ed DVD where Carrey finds out Deschanel is his daughter. But Disney was the co-financier and they kiboshed it. Supposedly it's locked in away in some EP's vault (hint: his name rhymes with "Juckenheimer".)

Now, THIS would be funny as hell. Even as a joke/alternate ending.

Also...

If any of you have watched the Blu-Ray of "Yes Man"... And I mean the actual 1080p copy of the film... Zooey is also starting to look her age (27-30).

I've been a fan of hers since the beginning and while she obviously isn't in her 60s, I can definitely see her maturing (physically) compared to some of her early work in the late 90s, and from just a few years ago like in "Flakes". She doesn't look like a teen/college student any more and this was probably what the casting director(s) were going for.

reply

That is funny. Anyhow their age difference didn't bother me.

The weirder part was his 2 best friend being 15 to 20 years younger.

Jim is a great actor but he is getting too old for these type of movies. A little long in the tooth.

Zoey is awesome and looked great even for grand old age of 28/29/

The age difference didn't bother me one bit.

I'll tell you the greatest regret of my life: I let my love go.

reply

The age different isn't a big deal IMO, but he shouldn't really be be cast as early to mid 30's any more. He's starting to to look too old for that and I clearly noticed it during to movie. It reminds me of child actors trying to hang on to doing the kiddie roles for too long.

reply

I felt that the age gap was appropriate. Especially considering that throughout the whole movie, he's taking all these risks and doing all these things that he normally wouldn't. Dating a significantly younger woman was just one of those things he used to say "no" to.
Either way, people date outside of their age group a lot. No biggie.
