That's the impression that I had before watching, too. Nobody knows exactly and it COULD have happened the way it was shown.

Yes, it could have happened that way, but in all probability it didn't. I think the filmmakers were trying to keep Joe a semi-sympathetic character.

I think the film took liberties with the facts but no one knows how exactly the landlady got shot.
