What happened with John Corbett?

So apparently his character and Marianna ultimately broke up? (I guess he should have said "yes" when she asked him to run away with her.) This particular subplot should not been left has a loose end (along with Marianna's father; did she ever reunite with him and her siblings?). If these two issues were more thoroughly developed, this would have been an excellent movie. The final cut prevented this movie from being critically-acclaimed. Hopefully they'll release an extended/director's cut someday (doubtful since I only first heard of the film when I browsed my Netflix queue).

MAJOR SPOILERS

Personally I liked the loose end of never reuniting with her family. I doubt she would've especially after changing her name to Sylvia. Plus this always made me think of how her siblings would've grown up without her and what they would look like when she came back since it would be 12 years later. Like her oldest brother Pat would be about 26 and her younger brother and sister, Bobby and Monnie would be 22 and 20 and Robert, her father, into his 60's.

However, John's loose end was one that just seemed kind of thrown in there to show how bad Sylvia had gotten. His subplot wasn't much of anything. But either way, both of these subplots are irrelevant. Those were simply to get the characters where they needed to be. That's not what's going on anymore. What mattered at that point is Maria bringing her parents back together so Sylvia can patch her own guilty past up and reveal what's been haunting her for over a decade.

I don't speak whatever.

Really? Do you really think that Corbett's character had any relevance? he was just a regular joe who she was having sex with. Do you really believe that just because these two loose ends you mentioned the film didn't get recognition? i don't think so.

He was a married guy, shades of following in her mother's footsteps? The affair just reinforced her self-loathing.
