Burning Plain K Mart footage destroyed

I heard a rumor, and I stress its only a rumor, that the footage shot at Kmart in Las Cruces, was ruined because at the end of shooting, someone re-wound the film but forgot to remove the old film. So the next day of shooting was supposedly done over the Kmart footage. Again I cannot confirm this, but was wondering if any one else heard this rumor, or if someone saw the movie, was the shopping/parking lot scene in the movie.

yeah, i'm pretty sure that it's in there. it's a great movie!

they shot on multiple cameras. what you are asking did happen, but, luckily, they still had enough footage to do the scene from other camera(s).

Well, if they shot it on film, what you described is simply not possible. Film magazines are not rewound. They are put in cans marked "tail out" and sent to the lab for processing. Most professional 35mm motion picture cameras don't even have the ability to rewind. So it is just that, a silly rumor.

If on the other hand it was mastered digitally. like with a Red camera for example, then I guess it is theoretically possible to shoot over scenes already recorded. I've been working with film and digital technologies for about 20 years now and have never heard of such a thing happening, particularly on a high end feature production like this.

But who knows... anything is possible. If it happened you can bet your bank that the camera assistants responsible are probably asking if "you want fries with that?" right now!

reply

It did happen. They shot on film. And the AC who made the mistake was fired.

Yes the shopping/parking lot scene is in the movie, and is quite funny - one of the few laughs in the entire movie.

This movie was shot on film. Film does not work that way. What you describe would have resulted in a double exposure. Two shoots layered over the top of each other.
