East of Eden

Started reading the book and the character Cathy Ames which Jennifer Lawrence is said to play in the future has some parallel situations with the Mariana role. I thought it very interesting. Cathy Ames would not be a new type of role for her.

reply

Yeah i think there are similarities based on what i know about the book. I still have to read it though.

How are Cathy and Mariana anything alike?

Passenger side, lighting the sky
Always the first star that I find
You're my satellite...

It has been a while since I read East of Eden or watched The Burning Plain. I remember something like they both killed their parents by fire then both abandon their child(ren), then even though not Jennifer Lawrence anymore when all grown up has multiple sex partners. Maybe more stuff but I forget.

That is true, but unlike Marianna, Cathy killed her parents without remorse or guilt.

Marianna abandoned her daughter because she thought she didn't deserve her (after having killed both her daughter's maternal grandmother & paternal grandfather)& didn't want her to be 'bad like her'.

She told Maria that she especially thought about her on her birthday.

Cathy was evil, and could have cared less about the sons she abandoned. She never gave them a thought.

She felt no love for them. She felt no love for anyone.

I agree, Cathy was evil incarnate. I don't know how anyone can be like that. Marianna is more likable for sure.
