Amazing Movie!!!!!

i was lucky enough to be part of a test screening of this movie, it was a rough cut, and it still impressed me. its probably Arriaga's best work so far, and that is not easy to say. he is an amazing writer and now i can say that he is an amazing director as well. the acting is amazing in most of the roles, Charlize is incredible as she is in everything. Yazpik clearly marks his triumphant entrance to Hollywood. i cant wait to see the final version.

That's good to hear about Jose Maria Yazpik. From some reason, a lot of Mexican people on his boards have criticized his acting and I was worried whether or not he could take to The Burning Plain but apparently he can.

Maybe this film will make him the next Gael Garcia Bernal.

I don't speak whatever.

i'm sure he is gonna be big soon, he is great!

what about kim basinger?

please tell me she's good in it....

Yeah, I can definitely see die-hard Innaritu fans bashing Guillermo Arriaga. Poor guy. I think it's great what he's doing with The Burning Plain, I just hope it lives up to the expectations that it is his style of writing but different. From what I've read and heard it's going to be crazy...but in a good way!

What's good is that Arriaga has gone away from the whole single-event happenings connecting the characters such as the car crashes from Amores Perros and 21 Grams or the gun-shot from Babel. No, there's no big connection in The Burning Plain, it all happens over time which I think makes the story even more interesting. There are certain events like the car crashes and the gun-shot, though. Just a lot more intense.

I don't speak whatever.

Great? moviefan1901, are you sure you didn't mean amazing? Seems to be, that's your go-to exaggeration.

Maybe Jose Maria Yazpik got big in your mouth, but to this point, he's still not a household name or anything. In fact, I'd never heard of him till now.

Could Jennifer Lawrence and Tessa Ia get Best Supporting Actress buzz for their roles? Could they make another Adriana Barraza/Rinko Kikuchi style combo?

reply

That's what's always been on my mind since they announced who would be leading the cast. I think Charlize may get a nomination somewhere in there but probably not as much attention as the unknown actresses. I'm more looking forward to watching Tessa Ia as Maria surprisingly and I've never even seen her in anything.

I don't speak whatever.

reply

Tessa is amazing, Guillermo will probably get nomination, sound and editing too, but Charlize its not probable. its not her best role even if she is amazing in it.

reply

i really doubt that a combo like that will happen, maybe Jennifer could get a nom, but even with Tessa being so good its a long long shot.

After hearing of the involvement of Omar Rodriguez and Hans Zimmer with the score, I must ask, what were your thoughts on the music?

reply

I just saw a screening of it at the Toronto film festival, and it was very impressive. It was a bit unexpected, but i enjoyed it a lot

reply

Was Charlize nekkid in it?

reply

more than once

reply

Several times in fact.

I don't speak whatever.

Awesome

I know this thread is 13 years old but whatever...

I don't think I would call it amazing. It is a good film, I liked it, and it's got a good cast for the most part, but a few things kept it from being great. For one thing, Theron and Lawrence don't look that much alike. A little makeup job could have made Lawrence look like a young Theron and that would have helped.

The guy playing the young Santiago looks nothing like the older one either. lol... and this was even pointed out in one of the lines in the movie. Their skin tones are a lot different too. So, I don't know... that part of the movie didn't work.

The characters were misplaced to some extent, there was another guy in the film that looked more like the older Santiago, why didn't they use him to play young Santiago?

Anyhow, this movie works for the most part, it's a story about redemption, forgiveness, loss, pain and it does have a powerful catharsis at the end and it touches home fairly well. I can see where the director was going with it even though the whole film doesn't quite reach it's destination, it makes up for it at the end. The story revolves around flashbacks between Theron and Lawrence's characters. It's a pretty good study in how things effect people in their lives and the unusual things they'll do to bury the pain they feel.

I noticed the critics hated it though. It's got a 45 on metacritic and 38% on RT. No way it's that poor. I'd give it a 7.2 out of 10. It's good... and a pretty strong performance by Theron and Lawrence. If you like these two, I'd recommend it.
