First off, let me make clear that I've never supported Bush, I've been on the anti-war side the whole time, and I believe we need better treatment for our vets / better equipment for our soldiers eight years ago. That said -- I did not enjoy this movie. It should have been two movies: One thoroughly documenting the lies and propaganda that led us into Iraq, and another thoroughly documenting Tomas Young's life.
RE movie 1: The bits and pieces of video that show the senators making scare speeches and voting seem ridiculous of course, now that we know how wrong they were. But the fact is, a lot of people believed every word at the time, and it is important that we don't just remember the public being fooled, but -how- the public was fooled.
RE movie 2: The parts that showed Tomas' life felt slapped together to highlight the anti-war message. There were parts that dragged that should have been edited shorter. There were a lot of parts where I wanted to see more of his life but didn't, such as his wedding day, and a talk with his brother.
Most upsetting to me is the feeling that this is an anti-war movie that uses a handicapped veteran for leverage. We don't need to go there. The truth is ugly enough on its own.
Yes, Bush and his administration deserve to be remembered as fiends.
Yes, the senators deserve to be remembered as incompetent, if not outright liars.
Yes, we need to draw attention to those who are coming back injured from war.
But not like this.
