Does this work in the 21st Century?

I saw the original Footloose, but not this one.

However, I am having trouble believing this remake. It was unrealistic enough that in 1984, dancing would be outlawed in some town in the United States. But 2011 is way too unbelievable.

This movie seems to have an outdated concept.

You just need the conceit for the film. A small town that bans dancing.

Its that man again!!

You would think so but no, it's not completely outdated. In my hometown we still have prom but there are churches that combine efforts and hold an alternative prom without sinful dancing & music. I'm not even kidding. The kids who go dress in "modest" prom gowns and have a banquet. When I went to Senior prom in 1995, the Sunday school teacher and youth minister from my church came by our house and criticized my aunt because she told my cousin and me we did not have to attend the "alternate prom" unless we wanted to. It was quite a scene especially when she told them they needed to re-read their bibles. 20+ years later they are still pushing the banquet but fewer and fewer parents feel obligated to force participation on their children. So to sum up, you would think it would be antiquated concept but it's not!
