Is anyone else confused about where male victimhood comes into play?

I mean, in the second episode, it shows that Eric kissed his teacher. And she told him no. And yet at the end of the episode, we see the website about learning of the signs of grooming. In this case, he kissed her. I thought the show was gonna have it where he's a victim of this?

SPOILER

They hook up at the end of episode three. Or rather he gets victimized at the end of episode three. Until then he’s been more like the offender than the victim. Yes, I know the teacher is the adult and the one with the responsibility to know better but he can still be expected to know right from wrong. His behavior indicates he knows he shouldn’t be pursuing her.

That's what I mean. He put the moves on her first and she said no. So yes, I understand at the end of episode three, they end up having sex in her car. But, he put the moves on her first. She could have told on him.

reply

Agreed. The problem is that a lot of fictional stories just couldn’t happen if people did the sensible thing.

This sort of thing is every straight teenage boy's fantasy. Victim, shmictim. I wish I had had a teacher like this.

reply

Teenage girls fantasize about having a sugar daddy too. Does that mean you consider that teenage girls and sugar daddies are equally OK?

reply

According to the summary he is 17 and she is early 30's. Its only wrong because they are student and teacher. She is the adult and should know better, he is 17 and horny. This is a fantasy that lots of people have, female and male.

Agreed. I think American law has a weird interpretation of people’s mental development. If I understand correctly the age of consent is no lower than 16 in any state, because they just can’t understand the consequences of sex. I could agree with that, but defendants younger than that have been tried as adults for murder and sentenced to life without parole. Also, 18 is old enough to marry, sign binding contracts or fight bleed and die overseas, but not responsible enough to drink (or smoke in some parts).

reply

You’re right that if a male 18 year old was having sex with a random 30 year old it would not be breaking the law. Only because she is his teacher it’s a problem. If the schools let that slide it would be unethical cause how do we know if she says have sex with me and I’ll give you good grades. Even in college it isn’t right for a professor to have a relationship with a current student in their class but the difference is they don’t go to jail for it.

I thought the first 5 episodes were pretty good,

Two people who understand the situation and make conscious choices, no one is really ''guilty'' of anything bad.

If someone really wants to blame someone the boy is 17 not 10 so you cant blame the teacher more than the boy, for me what they are doing is ok nothing to condemn except that the teacher is cheating on her (boring) husband.

Spoilers!

Eric explains it at the end. The grooming didn’t start after he kissed her.

It started when she volunteered to tutor him, then when she took him to the college, she told him to call her Claire and to leave the dance with her.

She created the environment for him to fall for her, leading to the kiss.

reply

It's part of the grooming process. She pushes him away, which confuses him and makes him feel embarrassed for ever thinking he could have her. So then later when she pursues him, it makes him want her even more because he is just shocked that she does want him and he will do anything she wants now.
