Use of color

Maybe I imagined it, but I felt like the colors inside Göran and Sven's house were quite drab and understated, while in the sequences showing the neighborhood, all the houses were painted bright colors, people wore bright clothing... almost too bright, to the point of being cartoonish. This reflected in the red jogging suits, too, as though Göran went jogging just to try to seem acceptable. Of course, this made everyone else look somewhat artificial, which they mostly were. If the director made this choice consciously, then I have to say it's a most unsubtle attempt at taking a jab at heterosexuals I've seen in a long time. :)

drabness = their relationship.

I think you're right that the colors inside Goran and Sven's house were dreary, but I don't think it was any kind of jab at heterosexuals. From my understanding, the production design of Goran and Sven's house was an intentional decision to indicate that they had just moved into a place that was untended and unloved, just like their dead garden. It's Patrik who knows how to do the gardening, and it's Goran who knows how to make a home - he sets about redecorating the nursery room with the different colors and the "Baby Watch" and reconciling as best he can with Isobell. I think the point the director was trying to make is that making a home is a process that takes time and care and nurturing.
