One of the best 'Oliver Twist's' I've ever seen

I've seen the 1948,1968,and the 2005 films..Also, most of the tv versions. The Lean film is brilliant and has stood the test of time, however this 2007 Oliver isn't merely an object of the society's greed. Oliver defends himself and others which makes the narrative all the richer. For the first time, there is a true bond between Oliver and Nancy. Not just a surface relationship. And the Bill Sikes isn't the usual one note monster. He goes much deeper than that.Fagin and the Artful Dodger are among the best. The story's been told in the past and I'm sure it will be told in years to come. This version turns a daring corner and gives Oliver a new twist and a new life.

I liked it too. I agree with you about Sikes' character. The same is true of the way Fagin was portrayed. He wasn't just greedy in this adaptation, he had some emotional complexity. Spalls had such a memorable role in Harry Potter, it was hard to see him here as anything but a rodent.

The most memorable character for me (besides Nancy) was the awful workhouse woman who ended up marrying Mr Bumble. There was something about her voice and delivery that really made her stand out. The scene with her kicking her pompous husband was a great comic relief. I've got to look for her in other British films.
