Garbage
I wish I hadn't wasted my time watching this movie. I wish I had time to explain all the things I found wrong with it, but here are some lowlights:
- What is up with that description? It almost has nothing to do with the movie! Were we supposed to be thrown by it? If so, it didn't work, because I predicted the least-common denominator plot in the first 20 minutes.
- There should have been more time spent on the garment workers...it would have redeemed a predictable and sorry plot.
- The "lost little girl falling into the arms of sad, manipulative older man" trope is overplayed, so I felt no sympathy for either Zoe or Ben. Zoe had resisted his advances, and overcame her circumstances without that part of the plot, I would have some respect for her.
- Other disturbing things: Alex was single-handedly supporting the family while her husband pursues his dream (remember the scene where they are figuring out their expenses -- it was a major sacrifice for her); she gets berated for wearing man-suits by her children and the woman she takes in; is called a workaholic even though she the only one freakin' working at the time; and, the only scene in which there is any intimacy between her and her husband is when she's wearing something revealing (and there's no way of telling if they haven't had sex in a while). Here's the real kicker: after supporting him, her husband has the nerve to say that she's neglecting him, cheats on her, and then she takes him back? Wow. She should have left his sorry ass ASAP.
I know everything "worked out" in the end, but at whose expense? Are we supposed to be happy that Alex and Ben got back together, with her probably feeling guilty for being a successful businesswoman?
I hated this movie more than I can remember ever hating any other movie for a long time. I kept watching because I hoped that at some point, there would be something empowering. Lifetime, please start using your platform as a "network for women" to air things that aren't so incredibly insulting to women and their pursuits.
