Jamie Dornan - bearded and handsome

Handsome again as always. With those suspenders.. And he rode a bicycle!!
Couldn't find any images with the bicycle but here is one picture from that scene:

I was so glad I watched this movie.
Love the music and the fields..
Now I noticed he was always skinny as he often mentioned in articles or interviews.

The film location was beautiful.
Jamie was quite stunning in this movie.
I have to admit, I have never seen him quite so comfortable in front of the camera.
In all honesty (and I do realize this is unkind), I could of done without her family visiting and watched Jean and Jamie's characters interact for the entire movie.

That being said, I found this movie severely depressing. I couldn't sleep, so I thought I would try to find this on YT.
Now I'm sad and balling my eyes out and it's not even 6 in the morning yet. I felt miserable for everyone at the end. I do not think that is what the director and writer intended though. The little bit we know about Joe -breaks my heart. I really needed some assurance he would be alright at the end...and we didn't get that.

I definitely missed something or perhaps the copy I viewed skipped-over some parts.
At the beginning, is Hannah making Joe burn all her old letters? If so, why do you think that is?
Near the end, a police officer stops by and informs the dad that Joe is wanted for theft...was it because he stole lettuce in the scene that he jumps on Sams bike?!?
He also asks if that book (in the cops hand) was stolen from his mothers house. The dad replies that she gave it to Joe. I didn't see her give Joe any books. There is a scene right before that where we see Joe packing and putting papers and what appeared to be a journal into his bag. Are we to assume that Joe stole all those books at the beginning (didn't look like a bunch of books in his bag though) or did she give them to him? If he did steal them, do you think the dad lied to the cops about her giving them to Joe because he saved Sam or because Hannah wouldn't of wanted him in trouble? Or did she really sell them off to pay the bills? Also, are we to assume the cop found the book where Joe was living..if so, why would he of left that one behind?
I know, many questions -I'm sorry. Apparently, many things went right over my head.

1. At the beginning, is Hannah making Joe burn all her old letters? If so, why do you think that is?
I think so, Hannah is. My guess is she, like most old people usually do, goes over things close/valuable to them such as letters, souvenirs, books etc. for the last time and destroys them or asks someone to keep them. In old people's minds such things can't just lay around, they need to have a good ending, destroyed means to go with their owner to the next world, kept means they will be well taken care of after their owner no longer can take care of them.

2. Near the end, a police officer stops by and informs the dad that Joe is wanted for theft...was it because he stole lettuce in the scene that he jumps on Sams bike?!?
I'd think so but I guess I am wrong lol; I heard the cop mention "farm". I will have to revisit this.

I believe she really sold them off to pay the bills.
JD's character was free spirited but seemed to be, well, not very responsible sometimes (asides from being extremely good looking Jamie Dornan-ly). He smoked in Hannah's room and even more let Hannah smoke, he slept with Kate, he lead Same to the sea, all dangerous things he did, but I don't think he stole her books. It is possible she might have given him one or a few books.
Joe knew Hannah wouldn't be around long any longer, and now her son (Robert) was saying he would take care of her and Robert never tried to hide his dislike towards Joe, so I thought that was why Joe left and left the book behind.
I think Robert did not want to do anything with Joe anymore hence his answer to the cop in the movie.

Don't be so depressed . This is life and its cycle, people are young then old then sick and die. In the mean time you can enjoy 5sog  and other romantic movies.

I was really sad..irrationally so.
Maybe I just watched it at a bad time. I'm usually all for realistic endings too. I couldn't even force myself into thinking that Joe would ever make it to the States.
Did you feel hopeful at the end for ANY of the characters?

Anyways...thank you so much for answering my questions. I want to rent it to see if I missed anything but I'm obviously an emotional basket case this week. I'm thinking its not a good idea ;)

Probably it is being a bad time for you. It is currently a really bad time for me too but definitely I don't feel sad after watching this movie, maybe because I am used to seeing old people's last days and their relationships with their children, grandchildren etc.(my grandparents, my parents). I am rewatching a few old movies, not comedies nor romances, and do feel very sad afterwards, but I don't after this movie.
Also, only Hannah passed away and that was sad, the other characters they were ok aren't they? Or did I miss something?

On the 5fsog board people were talking about the Outlander series and I found it on youtube too. Do you plan to watch it to cheer you up? I am watching some old British TV series to cheer me up, dramas and action TV series.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling happy. I hope this week is a good one for you :)
I'm really enjoying catching up on the show Penny Dreadful. It definitely won't cheer me up, but it's visually stunning. The characters are very interesting but it's not for the faint of heart lol.
I'm hoping they will start shooting The Fall soon but I've heard not until the end of the year :/

After watching this movie a second time tonight, my thoughts were she lied to her son that she had sold the first edition books. But, she had really given them to Joe in appreciation of his friendship and caregiving. I think she wanted Joe to sell them for enough money to travel to the U.S. He may have sold some already and only had a couple of his favorites he kept (or planned to sell later). I would have liked to have seen more scenes of Dornan and Simmons, too. The way he handed her a smoke and sat on her bed talking to her as a person probably gave her comfort. I think they genuinely liked each other's company and they were both free spirits.

These were my impressions because the film was a puzzle at times. I didn't find it depressing, though.
