How in the world?

This game takes place before the events of God of War 1 right? In God of War 1, Hades offers Kratos the souls of the underworld to fight by his side, tells him that his progress is impressive, and that he should go forth in the name of Olympus. And Hades did all this AFTER Kratos killed his wife Persephone? How is that possible?
