What is wrong with a movie that isn't a piece of art? If I want art, I would go down to the Art Institute. If I want entertainment, I go to the movie house.
I'm not French and don't speak or understand it but in watching some extensive clips from this movie it looks entertaining.
It doesn't have the slick and polished look of what is spewing out of Hollywood lately, but is that bad?
I don't think so. It has the same sort of look as Fawlty Towers and realistic type of people rather than the plastic surgeon enhanced mannequins in Hollywood productions. That makes it better than most of what passes as movies today.
Face it, with $181.5 million in the till after only seven weeks, it is a bigger hit than anything Hollywood has produced this year except "10,000 BC" which has a worldwide BO of $251 million after six weeks, the cartoon "Horton Hears a Who", which has hit $230 million worldwide after being out for five weeks and "Jumper" which has had a BO of $209 million after nine weeks. "Jumper" did only $240,000 last week in the USA and nothing overseas at all and "10,000 BC" did about $8.1 million last week worldwide. So Ci'tis is going to become the 3rd (since it has steadily been bringing in $10-11 million in BO for the past three weeks at least, so only needs 3-4 weeks to pass "Jumper") largest box office of 2008 worldwide until the mega movies start opening in May. It is doing this without any hope of money coming from the English speaking countries of the world which have added over $20 million to "Horton"s BO and almost as much to "Jumper" and "10,000 BC" as well.
With that in mind, Ci'tis would have a larger BO than both Jumper and Horton right now and be less than $30 million behind "10,000 BC" were it not for it not being readily translateable to English. There has been a little talk about an English remake, perhaps with the NY vs Texas or any North vs South theme to replace the same usage in the current film. It doesn't even have to be that dramatic since there are many such contrasts in a France sized area within the USA such as Southern CA vs Northern CA or Seattle WA, NY vs Northern New England, etc.
I know we look at that type of comparison between Northern Illinois where I live and folks who live in Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc. I know when I first went to Minneapolis I was amused that they have so many pedestrian tunnels and overhead passages between their downtown buldings because it is so bitter cold up there in Winter. Yet folks in the South think we are related to Polar Bears ourselves because compared to them we have bitter cold Winters too. I still remember a Winter so cold that local cities were afraid that all Water Mains would burst because the frost line went below the 40 inch mark which is how far down Water Mains are buried to prevent their freezing up. That was the year that it went below zero F and stayed there for most of January.
That is the theme of this movie, preconceptions. Having been to 48 out of the 50 states and half of the Provences of Canada many times, I can't tell you how many of my preconceptions turned out dead wrong. That is what this little movie takes on and does so successfully.
All of those who went to see this movie can't be that lacking of taste, unless they are voting for Persident of the USA...
