French box office record

Hi !

This movie will soon make 15 millions visitors !!! within 3 weeks !!

France is a country with 62 millions people : 1/4 Usa population.

15 millions * 7,5 euros = 112,5 M euros

112,5 M Euros * 4 = 450 M euros !!!

450 * 1,5 = 675 M us dollars !!!

reply

why did you... 112,5 M Euros * 4 = 450 M euros !!! ...???? what means the 4 in this?
and with the Printemps du Cinéma many places were sold at 3.5 euro (I know I saw it yesterday and the theatre was full, 600 places for this movie per seance wow).

Nonetheless it will clearly be a memorable hit, good point for the french cinema :)

reply

He multiplied by 4 to give americans a sense of how much € that movie is making

coz the population in France is 4 times smaller than the pop of the US (300 divided by 65 is not 4 but nonetheless... )

kinda sad to see that the most talked about movie in France only has 2 threads in the most important movie site in the world

It might also be because we also have cinema forums where we can talk about this film in french about a movie everyone (except Belgium, well the wallon, and the swiss, well the french speaking part) and most of all the anglo saxon don't give a rat about.
You know that coming on here, you'll be speaking to only french people. What's the point ? You talk about a french movie, we only know about, to nobody cause we're so few on here...in english. GREAT.
I only posted cause of your post by the way.

reply

as20 : I agree with your basic premise
BUT IMDB is by far the most "important" movie site out there
and despite the lack of foreign language skills in the french population (compared to our europeans neighbours) ,loads of young people (those spending times on forums ) speaks english and should be more "engaged" in a site like this one.

and i can't stand aloociné ;-)

What's wrong with allo ciné ?
Still i don't see the reason to come on here for a movie we french only know about.
If you want to talk with foreigners about french films who had a little success abroad, like la môme or Amélie, ok.
But for les ch'tis, i don't get the reason. Allo ciné is much better for this film.

reply

Well I think you are wrong. My native tongue is spanish, but Im interested in world cinema. So if a movie in France successful I would be interested to know what's the movie about. So this site is the best reference to know about it and what people think.

LOL ?

Well, no reason to be proud of this success. This movie is far from a piece of art. I'd say it's more a TV movie and I only saw it because everybody went to watch it. If only someone had warned me, instead of keeping telling me it was great... But I was a follower for once, and now I'm shameful about it.

Proud to be french, asexual and sarcastic

reply

What is wrong with a movie that isn't a piece of art? If I want art, I would go down to the Art Institute. If I want entertainment, I go to the movie house.
I'm not French and don't speak or understand it but in watching some extensive clips from this movie it looks entertaining.
It doesn't have the slick and polished look of what is spewing out of Hollywood lately, but is that bad?
I don't think so. It has the same sort of look as Fawlty Towers and realistic type of people rather than the plastic surgeon enhanced mannequins in Hollywood productions. That makes it better than most of what passes as movies today.
Face it, with $181.5 million in the till after only seven weeks, it is a bigger hit than anything Hollywood has produced this year except "10,000 BC" which has a worldwide BO of $251 million after six weeks, the cartoon "Horton Hears a Who", which has hit $230 million worldwide after being out for five weeks and "Jumper" which has had a BO of $209 million after nine weeks. "Jumper" did only $240,000 last week in the USA and nothing overseas at all and "10,000 BC" did about $8.1 million last week worldwide. So Ci'tis is going to become the 3rd (since it has steadily been bringing in $10-11 million in BO for the past three weeks at least, so only needs 3-4 weeks to pass "Jumper") largest box office of 2008 worldwide until the mega movies start opening in May. It is doing this without any hope of money coming from the English speaking countries of the world which have added over $20 million to "Horton"s BO and almost as much to "Jumper" and "10,000 BC" as well.
With that in mind, Ci'tis would have a larger BO than both Jumper and Horton right now and be less than $30 million behind "10,000 BC" were it not for it not being readily translateable to English. There has been a little talk about an English remake, perhaps with the NY vs Texas or any North vs South theme to replace the same usage in the current film. It doesn't even have to be that dramatic since there are many such contrasts in a France sized area within the USA such as Southern CA vs Northern CA or Seattle WA, NY vs Northern New England, etc.
I know we look at that type of comparison between Northern Illinois where I live and folks who live in Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc. I know when I first went to Minneapolis I was amused that they have so many pedestrian tunnels and overhead passages between their downtown buldings because it is so bitter cold up there in Winter. Yet folks in the South think we are related to Polar Bears ourselves because compared to them we have bitter cold Winters too. I still remember a Winter so cold that local cities were afraid that all Water Mains would burst because the frost line went below the 40 inch mark which is how far down Water Mains are buried to prevent their freezing up. That was the year that it went below zero F and stayed there for most of January.
That is the theme of this movie, preconceptions. Having been to 48 out of the 50 states and half of the Provences of Canada many times, I can't tell you how many of my preconceptions turned out dead wrong. That is what this little movie takes on and does so successfully.
All of those who went to see this movie can't be that lacking of taste, unless they are voting for Persident of the USA...

Excuse for my english.

I prefer a real french movie with real fealings with a big succes than a copy of hollywood movies made by Europa Corps (Luc Besson).

The problem with those big movie french tycoons : the Berry family, Besson etc.. is to copy american blockbuster style.

There are many european movies, german, english made with our own culture and history, with such directors like von Donnersmarck, Wolfgang Becker, Ken Loach, who becomes real box office succes too.

Other thing : personnaly I don't like to stay and choose my movie According to "a good taste" It proves a sort of snobism.

reply

I know what you're saying. I love Bresson as compared to Besson, but you have to admit that Luc Besson is a master at what he does. Dany Boon is an enjoyable actor and I'm happy for his success, for this new movie he directed.

En tout cas moi, je suis ni français ni américain mais je parle français en amérique et j'ai bien hâte de savoir c'est quoi exactement ce ch'tis de film la!

reply

Over 18 million tickets sold and counting. Great success for this nice little comedy.

reply

OK, now it's 19.5 million people who have seen it.
I've just read this post and I'm quite jealous about the guy who is paying 7.5€ per movie.
I'm living near Paris and I'm paying 9.9€ each time!!
As a ch'ti myself, I've enjoyed a lot this movie even if it's usually the kind of movie I prefer to see on TV for free than paying the 10€...

When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.
