Does anyone remember what Gene Hackman movie they were referring to when they were discussing detective roles?

He was talking about the movie Unforgiven, but he said he would be a "benevolent Gene Hackman". Gene Hackman played a sheriff who ran his town with strict rules.
shareI think it was his character in The Unforgiven -Clint Eastwood's western-not a detective role.
shareLittle Bill was the character Hackman played in Unforgiven.
share Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven,"a strange Western{Sheriff Bill Daggett{Gene Hackman}............played that role.
Tom Selleck is a better actor than Hackman,Eastwood and Morgan{Free Ride}Freeman altogether.
I too like Selleck a lot ... I like the other guys too but it depends on their roles ... loved Hackman in his early stuff when he was the anti-hero, Eastwood as a renegade cop, Freeman in Seven
I'm interested that you called Unforgiven strange. Despite all its accolades, I never really liked it. I'll have to give it another go but I think I have seen it a second time and was still unimpressed. But the guy I went with loved it. I guess some guys just understand what is going on beneath the surface there or something.
yes he is referencing "forgiven". gene hackmens' little bill was quite Malevolent!
Jessie states he would like to be a Benevolent town sheriff. bill kept order, but was ruthless and did not care about peoples rights, where Jessie is saying he would like to keep order but with fairness and not ticketing every poor sap that he could get away with
Ha, ha ... "ticketing every poor sap." Yes, and why can't the town council figure out that might really not be good for tourism. Isn't this supposed to be one of those quaint towns that people like to wander into to feel like they are being transported back into a simpler, nicer time?
