when the guy walks out of the tunnel and says "we dont have to do this, we don't have to live by the rules..." then gets killed is he pretty much saying he wants to protect matt and nina? like not eat them?
so hes kind of a good guy?

The "rules" were that they eat human meat to survive and "remain pure". That is what that old man explains at the end. Basically, that man who walked out of the tunnel tried to convince the killer that they didn't have to do that anymore and they could just let these people go. Apparently, the killer disagreed...
