Yeah the gay pastor killing his lover to cover up their affair bit didn't really help the film in my opinion. That's one little tidbit that easily could have been left out and the film would have been better for it.

p.s. - The last scenes of this movie (the ones unfolding while the credits roll) make this film worth watching. I found them very funny. In a dark way of course...

You can replace the start of the movie with any number of revenge plots against the innocent or guilty. It speaks of what lies beneath, and the danger of not understanding what we fear.

So many awful things happen because of a silly little thing. It's ludicrous to think it takes a huge event to lead to tragedy.
