Corporal punishment: Historically accurate?

There's a scene where the students are subjected to corporal punishment in the form of caning. Was this historically accurate for the movie's setting? The movie took place in South Africa in 1990.

Not sure, but here in Aus, corpral punishment finished in 1987 in the public school system, but not private school.

Yes it is accurate. I was in grade 12 in '91 and still got canned most days at school.
