Is this movie realistic?

So, I just watched this movie last night but I read the books (the first 6) then when I got to be about 13 I stopped because they seemed kind of immature (That's not to offend anyone by the way, they are very good books I just felt that I should be reading something a little less concerned with cliques and middle schoolers). Anyways, when I was watching the movie I was extremely annoyed by the intense-life-taking-over-obsession with fashion that these girls had. In other words, it was nothing like I had pictured in the books.

I mean, if you're into fashion, and have the money to spend $400 on a shirt that's perfectly fine, but these girls are 12. So what I'm wondering is: Do some young girls (in very rich parts of the country) rely this heavily on fashion and wear all designers? I live in a nice area (Eastern massachusetts) and the clothes that people around here are for the most part classy but still casual, some people have designer clothes but not a whole wardrobe full.

(I know that a lot of people will lie on this but I'll ask it anyways) What kind of clothes do you wear and do you know any areas where girls really wear clothes like this all day everyday?

I was 12 when I first started reading these books and now I am 17.
These books are pretty superficial and unrealistic.
I probably know more about high end clothing than the average 12 year old when I was that age, but I surely wasn't fashion obsessed. Most 12 year olds are interested in having fun.
Most 17 year olds aren't obsessed with $400 sweaters though, lol.

umm you can't really speak for ''most'' 17 teen year olds. might come as a surprise but a lot of girls (no matter what age) ARE obsessed with high fasion/expensive clothing. most teenagers (mostly girls) don't like hanging around certain people unless they dress a certain way, or have a lot of money. there's even a thing where most middle school/highschools girls are selling their bodies for money to buy expensive shoes and bags.
i was in 6th grade at one time and kids in my class would make fun of someone just because they didn't have an ipod.

you should really get out more :)

i like these clothes i like this hair, it's not emo it's not anything ¬¬

Being a 16 year old girl myself I can honestly say I know no one who wears $600 sweaters or 7 for Mankind jeans or any other really expensive jeans or clothes at my school. There are people who carry around expensive bags like Coach or Louis Vuittion but that's about it so perhaps it's YOU who needs to get out more!

I dis agree with alot of the posts in this conversation. Highschool and middle school was alot like this for me. I really like this series also because I moved from flordia to a very rich school district and place called fox chapel people really are like that there. There is also a mall like right by this area that only sells desighner stuff called ross park mall.

Yes, the average person DREAMS of "High end clothing".

there's even a thing where most middle school/highschools girls are selling their bodies for money to buy expensive shoes and bags.

[sarcastic:] Yea I am sure this is the biggest epidemic going on every where,eh?

i was in 6th grade at one time and kids in my class would make fun of someone just because they didn't have an ipod.

Yea I was in 9th when ipods had gotten popular and the same thing occured to me, but in retrospect an ipod isn't an article of clothing, genius.

you should really get out more :)

Yes, enlighten me.
Where can I meet this said group of people who are spreading their legs for Juicy Couture charms?

--------------------
Over all, I can't follow your logic maybe it's because you don't have any.
Although I don't attend a Suburban high school but I live in college/university town and most people don't wear Ralph Lauren sweaters and Prada leggings to a lecture hall is all I'm saying. They all dress like crap.

The AVERAGE person in America is broke, that's why none of your sentiments aren't even plausible. Sorry.

Thank you for that last statement!

I completely agree because honestly, while fashion may be a fun detail of being a teenage girl, it shouldn't matter that much and in the long run it probably won't give you any advantages at all.

On the flip side, I would like to say that clothing is important. The way you dress gives other people a message about you (whether you dress preppy, sporty or grunge) you find friends and your own niche by your style. Dressing "fashionable" does not mean that you spend a fortune on a top - it means that you make a $20 shirt look just as good (or better!) as a $200 shirt. Your clothes give you confidence and personality and that is why I think some girls think so highly of clothing.

The only thing I found unrealistic was their age. They should've been at least 2 years older.

I completly agree with you.

Well I live in a part of the US where the best thing is "the North Face." I am constantly looked at funny for being the only girl in designer clothes. I don't wear the $400 shirts more like the $100 shirts. But I'm not as mean as the girls in this movie but yes, there are some young girls who have designer clothes. Now not all of my clothes are designer but about 75% of my closet is! I love pearls, Juicy Couture hoodies, BCBG dresses, Juicy Couture charm bracelets, and Harajuku Lover bags the best.

I haven't read any of the books but I thought it was a really worthwhile viewing; Certainly better than Mean Girls 2 which was bad but I think comparing to the 4.9 rating it's under-rated.

reply

It's exaggerated and makes fun of itself, but the way girls treat each other? Totally real.

Even through I went to school wear girls really were like this with designer clothing I never really got into it. My parents had alot of money but I really just liked buying what I liked and some of it was designer and some of it was like Jc pennys.
