The main characters do nothing but treat everyone else like children.

This used to be one of my favourite TV Shows of all time, but when you re-watch all episodes and all seasons it becomes clear that the main characters (the SRU) constantly patronise people. I know that they have to make sure a bad situation doesn't escalate, but do they think the people they are talking to are stupid? Why not just talk to them straight up without the patronising tone.

They talk to you like they're your best friend and they don't even know ya! ~ Speed.

I have thought that way before too. How rediculous that a cop is really here to help you when you are holding hostages or robbing a business.

But then I realized that most of these episodes are centered around desperate people who are operating outside of themselves. They are more likely to respond to this "I want to be your friend" attitude then a more direct authoritve one.
