Inflated Rating?

Really? An 8.0 rating? This had to be inflated by girls who loved Robert Pattinson in Twilight.

I didn't enjoy the movie at all, but I don't think that Pattinson or any of the other actors did an especially terrible job. I just found the movie to be relatively humorless and the plot didn't reel me in.

Reading some of the other reviews, I suppose I can understand why some people enjoyed it and perhaps I just don't appreciate British humor like some others do (i.e. British people). But 70% of voters rated this movie a 10/10. That seems ridiculous. If a theater full of 100 people saw this movie, would 70 of them rate the film as perfect?

Hopefully this is just a problem due to small sample size and once more people vote, the rating will get knocked down to a more reasonable number. It may sound petty to complain about this, but I (along with many others I'm sure) use iMDB's ratings to help determine which movie to watch and it sucks to waste a night on a mediocre movie that is supposedely an 8/10.

Is the moral of the story to never trust a rating based on under 1,000 votes?

Yeah, it's probably just sample size as you said.

I personally enjoyed this movie a lot and gave it 8/10 myself. But you brought up some legitimate points on how the plot could be seen as flimsy.

It's too bad you didn't like the film. Thanks for being respectful about not liking it... It's really annoying when people go, "OMG WORST MOVIE EVA!" and fail to say anything insightful.

Of course the Rating is Inflated, there is no way 60% of ppl. who saw it gave this movie a 10.
10 is supposed to be reserved to masterpieces, and here clearly is not the case.

Don't worry because the geeky boys will bring down the ratings.

Your right it's hard to understand British humor because you actually need some knowledge other than the crap you see on this side ot the pond.

What in bloody hell are you looking at!

reply

Mmm, yea. I like watching different/indie movies from actors I like, but not even Rob could save this one. To be fair, he was pretty good in it, but I thought everyone else was pretty terrible. There just wasn't a whole lot to go on.

I cringed every time his 'mother' spoke. Not only did she not sound like anyone's mother in the history of mothers, she was also trying desperately to sound British without feigning an accent. Americans/Canadians just don't talk like that.

Of course, that's mostly the fault of the writer. It could just be that British comedy style isn't the same as my own, but I really didn't think this hit the points it was trying to hit.

So yea, the rating is probably totally inflated by Robert fans who don't care what he does. Then again, I rarely agree with ratings. I usually think it's best to come up with my own conclusions.

i too was surprised to see the high rating (or maybe not). the movie's intention was good but on the whole it was just dry, charmless and humorless and everyone from Art to his ex's new guy friend annoyed me. Rob Pattinson's outburst in the end was a good scene but that's about it and I can't find a thing to like about Art's character. i wouldn't want to watch it again.

I'm English and having just seen it, will be giving it a 6. It was an OK film but was no masterpiece and the more people who see it, that didn't work on the film or have a crush on the star, the more realistic it's rating will become.

I really liked this movie. I saw it a while ago On Demand. I wasn't expecting much out of Robert Pattinson after seeing Twilight but was surprised because it was quirky and just kind of silly but had a heart to it. I would definitely watch it again. The ratings probably are inflated by Twilight girls but I can't really seeing any of those people really understanding or liking this film. Anyway, I loved Art. He was pathetic and nuts but you can't help but love him. And the self help guy was great.

Very late comment, whatever.

Personally, I find this film hilarious and heartbreaking and wonderful, but it really speaks to me and it's not going to speak to everyone. Also, I didn't like it nearly so much the first time I saw it, I had to see it again.

Anyway, you can't really trust any rating. I dislike many films that have outrageously high IMDB ratings or have received superlative critical praise. At the end of the day, you don't know if you'll like something or not until you give it a chance. If you pay too much attention to hype, you bring baggage to the experience which may end up ruining it for you. I think people have this problem with classics and texts they're made to study; overdeveloped expectations can suck the joy of art.

And yeah, they have this problem with actors, too. I've watched a lot of films because an actor I liked was in them (they tend to have similar taste in films to me and I find great stuff I never would have heard of), but I'm not going to judge the film based on that person's being in it.

And indie films that are fairly inaccessible (as this was before it came out on DVD) are going to be rated exclusively by critics and hardcore fans who went to the effort of seeking the film out. And festival goers, I suppose. That would be another reason for a lot of 10/10 ratings. However, this film actually deserves an 8/10 in my book, so don't be patronising. I doubt that many squealing Twilight fans actually saw or liked it much.

I would give this about a 7 it really isn't as bad as ppl are saying. In fact it's quite hilarious.
I'm suprised that Rob can actually act. I wonder if he and Kristen are sad they did the twilight films, because those are such horrible films and might hurt their chances of being taken seriously as actors.

I wonder how many of those that didn't like would say differently if Rob wasn't in it.
