ABC 'Family'

So...it's a show that obviously should be on Fox or Comedy Central...but it's on ABC Family? I know it's not the first time ABC Family has done something not very "family friendly," but they're not even hiding it this time...

I haven't seen those commercials, the ones I have seen have them all falling down and getting salt in their eyes.

I mean COME ON! What's the plot of the show anyway? And I don't care how much times might have changed, NOBODY can tell me this is family friendly or even at a minimum kid friendly. I liked it better when it was just FAMILY channel, Charlie Brown cartoons, Punky Brewster, That's my Dog...wish I could remember more of how it used to be but I sure can't...my but how we've come a long way in 'family entertainment', and I think I speak for most everybody with an IQ over 30 when I say it's not for the better.

reply

I'm in complete shock. There are shows on Comedy Central that aren't as inapproriate as this. What the heck is ABC Family thinking?? They could just stop lying to us and change the name of the channel.

reply

Indeed, they need to change it from ABC Family to DFR: Desperate For Ratings.

reply

I think they're trying to tap into teen audiences...trying to pull an adult swim

reply

[deleted]

It's called "famly entertainment" for a reason.
Just because there's the word "Family" in it, doesn't
mean it's for just kids. Not everything in the world has
to be safe for kids. In case you didn't know, there ARE
teenagers and adults in families.

reply

No, Comedy Central has enough unfunny shows as it is (looking at you, Mad TV and Mind of Mencia). Give this show to Fox or something.

reply

Well, why not give it a chance, the show might surprise you?

I think they are going for an animated series that a wide range of people can enjoy, and I think something like this would be a hit with teens and young adult viewers, too. And it is airing pretty late at night, it doesn't even come on until 10, I think that's perfectly acceptable for it to be a bit "edgier" perhaps.

The bottom line for me is that it looks like it'll be a funny show - isn't that reason enough to check it out?

reply

ABC Family hasn't been "for families" for quite awhile. I just saw a commercial for this show followed by a commerical for Not Another Teen Movie (also airing on ABC Family). They really need to change the channel's name.

reply

I heard they are stuck with Family in the name. Family can mean anything. this show is obviously targeting the adults and mature teens of familys. I will only say this once, Television is not a babysittter, and if you don't want to watch it fine.

"Television is not a babysittter, and if you don't want to watch it fine."

THANK YOU. Not many people realize this but ABC Family's normal viewers are probably not children, well at least through the afternoon and into the night. ABC Family usually airs sitcoms during the afternoon, which IMO caters moreso to a teen audience then a younger audience. With that said though I do realize these sitcoms are child appropriate. But many teens turn to ABC Family to relive the sitcoms that were shown as they were growing up. Now they have the opprotunity to introduce a new show that caters to this audience and people are up in arms. Dont simply look at the new of a station and imply what it should be airing. It does have a late night airing, a time when many other children appropriate stations also attempt to cater to an older audience. Adult Swim and Nick at Nite were not intended for younger children but they play on rather child appropriate channels.

The network wants to cater to an older audience late at night, probably because ratings at night have dropped, guess why because they probably lose that children audience late at night. Now I go back to that quote, parents you have parental blocks, you can monitor what your children watch, and honestly late night TV in general is intended for a more mature audience. I dont mean to attack any parents out there but its expected that you be the parent, not television. I know stations like Disney channel can make parenting easier, but now you just have to realize ABC Family wont.

Now with all this said I personally think the show is flith and I cant begin to explain how desperate ABC Family must be for ratings to show something like this out there. It is obviously trying to feed off the success of other rude, crude animated shows. I am not going to watch it myself and I do fully expect it to flop. I am moreso just addressing this issue on whether child appropriate stations should be airing, less appropriate shows late at night.

I AM THE KING OF VARIETY

reply

The problem is they can't; Pat Robertson put in his contract after he sold the channel to Fox that the channel is stuck with the "Family" name forever, along with the 700 Club. Which creates the most awkward lineup ever with this show, followed by the 700 Club and a late-night rerun of "Greek".

reply

That's 10/9 central meaning it comes on at 9, and EVERY single kid I know is up at 9 o' clock at night...so you can't very well say that's acceptable for it being edgier while aimed at teenagers and adults.

And the bottom line is that it doesn't have one genuine funny moment in all the clips thrown into the commercial, and with TV today, what you see in the commercials is the BEST you'll see on the show. A show as retarded as that doesn't deserve a chance.

reply

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who was more than shocked at the sudden filth showing up on ABC Family.

Seriously, when I saw the commercials, I did a double take. I was shocked enough at the liquor, but at least that I could understand. However, when they started talking about sex, I honestly couldn't believe it.

I'll watch the first episode of the show and give it a chance, but my expectations are dismal.

"Don't you dare throw your ring at me. That's so *beep* cliché, I swear I'll *beep* barf!"

reply

Something many of you fail to realize, "Family" means a lot more than just 5 year old kids. In a "family" there may be older kids, who would be allowed to watch this show at 10.

That being said, I am still surprised for this, and Not another teen movie to be on ABC family. Especially Not another Teen movie (there is a character who is completely nude...come on)

reply

As I've already seen the show since I work on it... I have a pretty good say. The commercials actually suck. The show is pretty funny but the highlights from the commercial doesnt really show the real humor in the show. Alot of comedy comes from the situations and from jokes that they say rather than you see.

reply

Well in our opinion it still has no right being on a family channel I don't care WHAT people say about families. The idea is to put the best into the commercials so there's actually something worthwhile to draw in viewers, and from what we've seen, whoever put those commercials together has failed beyond belief in doing so.

what is this crap? how in the world is this family related at all? even if it is targeted for teens and adults, doesnt mean it belongs on abc family. put it on a teen/adult channel. but, it just looks like total trash. i mean, this is all they can come up with? some pathetic sleazy moronic show with no substance or point to it? its pathetic. talking sleazeball cats? who gives a crap?

oh, and i wish they would stop using that disgusting motto, "a new kind of family". a new kind of family? well if these shows symbolize a "new kind of family" then im a little worried. thats the kind of fmaily they want? and besides, who are you to tell me how a family should be? ABC "Family", shut up and straighten yourselves out. Stop feeding us this crap. Stop sneaking inappropriate material onto your "family" channel, and then tomake up for it and make it seem more family-like call it a "new kind of family".

that was a rant, im sorry, but these things anger me a lot.

You're gonna eat lightnin'; you're gonna crap thunder.

reply

You're right, that was a rant, but you're not wrong.

This isn't Garfield & Friends, it isn't Felix, it isn't Alley Cats, Thunder Cats, Top Cat, Heathcliff, the Aristocats, the Cat in the Hat, Alice's Chesire cat, Figaro, the Lion King, Tigger, Thomas Cat or MGM's Leo. This does NOT belong on a family show because family generally means more than one generation, meaning parents and kids and aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents and great grandparents...and I can assure you, FEW people would consider this show fit for anything with the name FAMILY in it.

reply

"ABC "Family", shut up and straighten yourselves out."

Remember that ABC is owned by Disney.

Need I say more?

reply

I've seen a few posts on here with people saying that ABC Family needs to change their name. While I agree this stuff isn't family-friendly at all, there is a reason that the name doesn't change.

You know how late at night ABC Family broadcasts the fundamentalist Christian show "The 700 Club" hosted by Pat Robertson? Well, Pat Robertson actually founded the network. His network got so popular that he risked losing his non-profit status so he sold it, but the contract had some rule that no matter how many times ownership of the network changed hands the name "family" had to be kept in the title. He also made sure his CBN Broadcasting/700 Club would have a time slot no matter who bought the network and no matter how many times the network was bought and sold again. He thought that by doing this he would ensure that the network would remain moral, a source of, that's right, family viewing as the rest of the networks would likely go down the tubes with increasingly lowbrow and offensive content.

If you remember, some time ago they tried to make the channel more "hip" and call it the XYZ. That didn't last long because of that clause stating they had to keep "family" in the network name. Now, it seems they've finally found a nice clever little way around Robertson's "morality clause" by adding the tagline "A New Kind of Family."

I'm no fan of Robertson, but as far as this goes I almost feel for him. He made a good effort to keep a channel for the whole family even while he didn't have direct control over it anymore.

I, as many have said, miss the old Family Channel of my childhood, with shows like Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and stuff like that. Actually, I'm even nostalgic for Fox Family, which I wasn't a big fan of when it came out and replaced the original format. Fox Family relied a great deal on my generation's powerful love of nostalgia, with shows like Pee Wee's Playhouse and Camp Candy. I think ABC Family would likely profit quite a bit to do the same.

reply

If I recall correctly, when we had the Fox Family channel, we had Punky Brewster, Charlie Brown cartoons (MAJOR points there in my opinion), game shows like That's My Dog and Baby Races, and they showed the Munster movies and stuff like that...I agree it would do ABC family VERY well to get back to the FAMILY oriented programs instead of whatever will give them a quick fix of ratings.

reply

You want to know the real reason this show is on ABC Family? Because there is NO OTHER NETWORK IN THE WORLD that would put their name on a show this useless. Slacker Cats and ABC Family need each other: ABC Family's pathetic grab for edginess crossed paths with the writers' desperate need to pawn their awful show off somewhere. It's not necessarily the "edgy" content of the show that offends me (although I agree that it is totally inappropriate to put it on ABC Family) as much as the utter artlessness of it all. I have no problem with raunchy humor, as long as it's actually funny. The problem here is that this show is not funny, it's not original, and it's not appropriate for children. I cannot think of a single reason for this show's existence.

That was probably a little harsh, but...come on.

reply

Ain't harsh, it's the golden truth. S hit like that has NO use on TV because it's not good in any way, not creative or original or even funny. Just a mad grab for ratings.

reply

I love how every has such strong opinions but have never seen 1 episode. Where in the world are you getting your information from? Such BS

reply

I agree. That motto is so misleading.

They see me mowin' my front lawn...

reply

THEN LET'S NOT WATCH IT!!

if we don't watch the show, then, they won't get the ratings they want, and they will have to cancel it! =]

I mean, c'mon. Even ABC Family's partner site, i guess, ABC, wouldn't air this show. and ABC is mainly directed towards an older audience.

WHO's With me?? NO ONE WATCH A SINGLE MINUTE OF SLACKER CATS!!

reply

I second that motion.

reply

Yeah, my jaw just dropped when I heard the cat say something about sex. I was like, "Family?"

They should stick with family stuff, and family stuff is what you watch with your family. I know at the age of sixteen or so I had a hard time watching Scary Movie 2 with my dad. At the age of 19 I was uncomfortable watching that scene in Not Another Teen Movie when the girl was taking a dump in the bathroom or whatever with my boyfriend's parents in the same room, and now they're showing it there!

I wouldn't watch the show because it looks like crap, like it's aiming at trite raunchy humor, trying to duplicate Family Guy humor or whatever.

Although I loved NewsRadio and was shocked to see two of the actors doing voices for this show, eh... I think it comes on the same time Big Love comes on.

reply

It's not as family oriented as you think. Anyone would have problems watching those things with older people like parents, but if you watch it with your friends it wouldnt be uncomfortable so i really don't see your point. It's playing AFTER family hours which means it doesn't necessarily have to be that kid friendly.

I've NEVER heard ANYONE complain about Adult Swim being on cartoon network. Why is this any different? And the reason...It shouldn't be, and it really isn't.

reply

I think that one of the things ABC Family does best is creating series that appeal to a broad spectrum of age ranges within an average family, and Slacker Cats seems more of that kind of thing. I like that they have something for everyone, and over the past year or so their original programming has been really quite good.

Slacker Cats looks funny and like it's different from the new series that are on now, I'm looking forward to checking it out tonight.

reply

The reason I'm not complaining about Adult Swim is because they explicitly call the time slots "Adult Swim." I don't see ABC FAMILY saying anything about adults. Considering the lack of intelligence from the general public, they know "Adult Swim" means it's for adults, whereas with ABC Family, they're showing an adult show an hour before Adult Swim even starts, and it's advertised during the daytime and evening, and Adult Swim is not.

C'mon person!

reply

So ABC "Family" means, ABC "Friends," or ABC "Mature Audiences" now?

When they bought the channel, they bought the name. When they bought the name, they bought the type of programming. They made their bed, now they have to lay in it.

reply

Let's turn to dictionary.com for a definition of family:

"Parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not."

It does NOT say that the kids are 5 years old. What if the kids are grown up, say 16 or 17? They aren't going to want to watch "kids" shows with their parents, but this show is something that they would want to watch with their parents. A family does not have to consist of only a bunch of little kids and their parents, teenagers are kids, too. Think about it.
=====================
Sigs are overrated.

reply

This is just like what Cartoon Network did. They were a cartoon channel and made Adult Swim, so ABC Family has had, well, not necessarily perfect family shows, but this is played during "late night" (10 PM) and can therefore be played. I think they expect that families wont be watching TV at 10 PM, especially ABC Family.

~Don't follow in my footsteps; I walk into walls~

reply

Keep in mind, as early as 2003, they were showing movies like Blazing Saddles.

They see me mowin' my front lawn...

reply

Better than re-runs of Full house, Family Matters, and step by step.

reply

Eh...much as I agree with you about ABC FAMILY having somewhat FAMILY-oriented programming, I have ceased to care about this network. Especially since they started treating Whose Line? like crap.

reply

Probably purely because the central characters are cats. Therefor it's somehow bound to be OK for the whole family.
