What happens on the scene after the end credits?

I had to leave in middle of the credits. Now I read that the scene after the credits "sums the movie up". Can someone tell me what happens in the said scene?

Thank you very much.

A replacement pilot arrives. He has exactly the same mannerisms as Kannami, but his name is different. As he introduces himself to Kusanagi, she responds "I have been waiting for you." Interestingly, this time she makes an eye contact and half-smiles, unlike when she first meets Kannami she seems rather cold.

You can also see the "I have been waiting for you" bit in the trailer.

My take of the anime was that every pilot is produced or reincarnated after their deaths, so essentially they're all the same pilot except they don't remember anything.

do the japanese believe in reincarnation? and if they do, is it preferable to get off the wheel, or is it sinful to get off the wheel?

reply

A good percentage of the population are Buddist so the answer is yes they do.

Also, the tired look of the female mechanic as she sees the new "replacement" pilot is very revealing. We can infer that this replacement cycle is going over and over again for quite a long time, with no end in sight...

You may be able to understand many details in the main movie just by watching
that end credits scene... it's very revealing.

I thought it wasnt necessary, it was given away when the white haired guy came back along with the rest of the reveal that he would just come back; honestly when she mentioned the unbeatable character in the game i figured he would win and break the cycle

but the cycles are not necessarily the same as a. before he was shot to death by kusangi and b. someone mentioned she smiled at him this time; perhaps this means a change is eventually possible

reply

My take was that the smile and saying she'd been waiting, like jbwells said, meant that she'd found some way of taking down the unbeatable ace, more than likely some sort of countermaneuver to his circling flatspin, as changing the battle plan completely would reveal Kusanagi's plan to break the cycle.

Actually I think its because Kusanagi has realised at the end that she has already broken the cycle.

She has survived long enough that she has been promoted in the company to a level where she no longer has to fly combat missions (She`s about the only base commander that does so, all the others are human executives), she has lived long enough that her actual chronological age is almost the same as her physical one and she has family in the shape of her daughter so she has a life beyond this endless corporate war.

Killing `The Teacher` in air combat will achieve nothing, all that will happen will be that whoever manages it will become the new `Teacher`.
This is likely what eventually happened to the original human `Teacher` of `Innocent Aces`, he was eventually shot down by a Lautern Kildren pilot who then adopted the Black Cat insignia and callsign.

Oshii sure likes cycles! I'm thinking of the loop scene in Kim's house (GitS 2)

**Ending Spoiler**

This is my take,

Before "Teacher" killed Yuichi, Yuichi finally remembered Jinroh's last moment. When he shot Kusanagi and Kusanagi shot Jinroh (shown in blurry flashback). Also Kusanagi half smiled because she now can live with herself because of what Yuichi told her when they had that crying moment. Yuichi kept repeating somthing like "You can walk down the same road but see different things/ways". Even tho its a vicious cycle life is worth living.

reply

It's sort of like Camus' Myth of Sisyphus...and in fact Yuichi *quotes* Camus and Kusanagi recognizes the quote, right in the very beginning in her office.

reply

Exactly!!
