What was that ACCENT???

I DO enjoy & respect Uma Thurman's work, and especially enjoy her parts in Q.Tarantinos's movies, but WHAT was that accent she was trying to speak with? Was it supposed to be Irish? Northern-European (whatever that is)? It's certainly didn't sound like it's from any part of England or Scotland I'm familiar with. Any ideas?

I'm watching now and really can't figure it out myself! It sounded like a Patrician accent...

In the scene where Paul was at their house Victor told the story of how they met and it was at a bar in Copenhagen. So maybe they are implying she is Danish.

reply

Yeah, in the play David Hare writes that she is "Danish by birth, but next to nothing of her accent remains."

She sounded more stupid than Danish-y to me.

reply

Danish-y

Mmmmmmm. Danish-y.

reply

I'm impressed with myself for guessing Danish (and with Uma for pulling it off.) I guessed that because she sounds like Brad Pitt in "Seven Years in Tibet" (also a pretty impressive job at a difficult accent!)

reply

OK! Thanks for the responses! Not knowing any Danes, I guess I can be forgiven for not picking it up!

reply

Uma Thurman's acting was alright, but her accent was odd.

reply

Yeah, she sounded like Meryl Streep in Out Of Africa.

reply

Actually, Meryl Streep also played a Dane in Out of Africa - Karen Blixen. And Streep nailed Blixen's pronunciation which was different from the way most Danes speak (I'm also Danish). But Uma Thurman did not sound Danish in this film. It was more a mix of "Scandinavian", German and Dutch. In fact, when they mentioned Copenhagen, I assumed she was just visiting :)

I was wondering the same thing, I have no idea what its supposed to be
