So much hatred for the movie yet it made so much money?

Back in 2009 the movie was tremendously financially successful. This was during a recession where people were not frequenting movies so much so it was quite a ''surprise''. Transformers 2 was the first movie of that year to come close to the 1 billion mark which Avatar later exceeded a few months later.

Yet this movie is reviled and picked apart. I'm not here to argue the quality of the film but a film as bad in the eyes of the critics and movie goers as Transformers 2 is said to be would almost certainly be a box office bomb. Yet the film made so much money. It's very peculiar.

As silly as it sounds I think Megan Fox's image and the robots and their explosions ended up drawing in more people into the film exclusively more than they care to admit. When I saw this in the theater it was filled to the brim with teenaged boys. Hmmnn..

It's because people in the USA are idiots

reply

Oh right, that's why more than half of the film's worldwide gross came from foreign markets. . .

reply

The fact that you know this information makes you an idiot

reply

Wow, what a cleaver and witty comeback... NOT!

trash is trash, what else can you call it

That doesn't address anything I, nor PrimeMinisterX said.

I just watched the movie for the first time. I found the first 2/3 of the film to be genuinely enjoyable. There's an interesting story, some good humor, good performances and some good action.

The problem is that the story falls apart a little in the final act--there was one specific plot element which really confused me--and it's also just too long. Clean up the story a little and bring the film in right at the two hour mark and you have a pretty enjoyable sci-fi actioner from start to finish.

I just re-watched it for the first time in years last week and its not as bad as I thought. What were you confused about in the end? I agree about the movie being too long, I think all the Transformers suffer from this.

reply

It's been long enough since I've seen it at this point that I really don't remember it well, or remember what confused me. But I do remember thinking that it was not as bad as its reputation would have you believe. This is probably true of the entire series, really.

They are not among Bay's best films, but they also are not without their charms. If only they weren't so damn long, I think they'd have been better received. But with their runtimes they wear on you after a while.

You can only watch giant robots fight for so long...

I watched the start today and gave up. I got just far enough to discover that Bumblebee did not originate in the eponymous movie (which I actually quite like) and decide I didn't particularly like either of the stars. The one Transformers movie I have watched (I don't count Bumblebee as a transformers movie because I thought I was sitting down to watch something else) didn't work for me either so maybe it's not surprising I gave up so quickly.
I was surprised they used Diego Garcia as the base. It's a controversial place and perhaps it would have been more sensible to have a totally fictional location?
