a more kid friendly version of "Transformers Prime" (although I guess technically it would be the other way around since this one came out first).

It's more kid-friendly for sure, but apart from sharing a few similar characters or ideas, the two shows are pretty vastly different in their setups and how their stories unfold.
shareIt's only more "kid-friendly" because it has more humor than 'Prime'. But there's some great dramatic moments in TFA as well.
The drama in TFP isn't quite as sincere, and its small attempts at humor fail because they clash badly with it's contrived, melodramatic soap opera tone, which is why I love this series a lot more.
