Delicatessen and City Of Lost Children by Gilliam "understudies" Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro are required viewing. Both films are literally overflowing with all manner of grotesquerie - arguably even too much so, in case of the latter number.

I can't believe no one has said The Matrix. It's similar to Imaginarium in terms of the heavy influence religion has on their respective plots.
