This film reminded me of another Terry Gilliam film, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. It stars John Neville, Eric Idle (from Monty Python), Sarah Polley (when she was very young) and an 18 year-old Uma Thurman. The film has the same feel as Imaginarium and the same type of fantasy element.

Yeah! "Baron Munchausen". And also "Time Bandits". And "The Fisher King." They all have something similar to "Dr. Parnassus". so does "Brothers Grimm", but mostly just Heath Ledger and Gilliam.

How about "They Live"? Superficially it doesn't have much in common with "Dr. Parnassus", but the sunglasses in the movie work somewhat the same way as a mirror, to reveal truth or a hidden world within the existing world.

The original "Twilight Zone" TV series had some of the most interesting stories that I've seen, really, as far as magic and danger and alternate worlds.... things generally weird.

Which reminds me, one of the best writers who used to work on "Twilight Zone" was Charles Beaumont, and he did a script in the early 60s for a movie called "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao", which I think is very much similar to "Dr. Parnassus." Dr. Lao operates a travelling circus and his magic is delightful for those with good intentions but terrifying for people who had some kind of guilt to hide.

Also somewhat similar, not as much so as "Dr. Lao" (which is based on a story called "Circus of Dr. Lao" by Charles Finney), is Ray Bradbury's story/film "Something Wicked This Way Comes." The circus in that one is pretty much completely evil, but people's response to the illusions and temptations presented in hallucinations can affect their character and their ability to make moral choices, much as in Gilliam's film.

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'
