That male nurse

I wonder if the part at the hospital really happened, I mean where the male nurse was pretending to translate what the doctor was saying, but instead was scolding Waris for "showing herself to the white man" and for considering the operation to ease the damage done by the FGM. What a pathetic excuse for a human being that guy was.

Thank you so much for clarifying this for me. I was thinking that that is what happened but my coopy had no subtitles so it was all guesswork on my part!

This male nurse is mouthing the traditional Somali attitude regarding female circumcision - repulsive as I and those posting on this movie might find it, I don't think it's necessarily a question of evil.....
I read that when this film was aired in Somalia for a large audience of Nomadic people who had probably never ever seen a film before, fathers stood up afterwards and were horrified to see what was really done to their daughters, vowing never to let that happen again.
Generations of adherence to traditions can make people blind to the reality of what's actually happening, especially if they'll never experience it themselves.
That said, this particular character, the nurse, certainly would have had opportunity to come to see this from a different perspective, what with living in this different culture... And of course, it was his duty to translate the doctor's words rather than harangue her with his own prejudices-

We see the world, not as it is, but as we are.....

Did you read the book by any chance? Waris's Somalian relatives in England told her not to take her problems to British doctors. They wanted her to protect Somalians' secrets.

Think cynical thoughts.

I would hope, no matter where he is from, or his beliefs, when working in a Western civilized hospital as a qualified nurse bound by our laws, that he would keep his personal opinions to himself and relate what is said verbatim. Should he or anyone doing this be caught, they should be sacked immediately and action taken against them. That is praying on a vulnerable and weak person and if everyone started doing this to suit their own personal religions in hospitals, we could all be at risk.

I don't doubt for a minute that this happens and am glad they showed it so people are aware.

I don't believe at all that that scene really happened. Waris certainly would have mentioned it in the book.

In the June 1999 Readers Digest, they excerpted the book(s)? (she wrote three) It is included in that excerpt. The ironic thing is, it appeared (to me) they didn't even need a translator, she understood what the doctor was saying anyway.

I don't know if this really happened, or the director was just taking creative license with the movie.
Having said that, I wanted to slit his throat. After all that Waris had been through, such a vile an evil man, that male nurse.

reply

It did really happen, it's in the book. However from my memory I don't think he was a nurse, but another type of hospital worker, a porter or something. She describes her mortification at having to discuss something like this with a Somali man.

I guess we'll never know if it did happen, but I'm sure it would most certainly have happened to some-one, somewhere!
Some say this would never happen in the US or other countries like ours but, you're wrong. Too many bad things happen in hospitals that are covered up and never made public. You'd think in this, the 21st century, a mother would never be given the wrong baby!! But, it does still happen, and if that still happens, what else does?? I think you'd be surprised! Humans get emotionally involved and make personal judgements based on their own beliefs etc., and this should never happen.

If that actually did happen and the hospital found out what the nurse said, not only would he be fired, his nursing license would be suspended. He would also face legal charges.

This would happen in America. I'm not entirely sure of the UK laws regarding this situation, but I suspect the laws would be similar.

One more time: It really happened. It's in the book, though he wasn't a nurse, but a porter.

reply

Yep, like mentioned, it's in the book.

this remind me about the old Johnnie Carson Tonight show (am I dating myself LoL) ZaZa Gabor was on and Johnnie asked her to translate to a group of Russian dancers that was there.) He asked Zaza to ask them if they liked the USA and what was the memory thing they like.... Well Zaza would not relate it to the group, Johnnie asked her again to repeat what he said... she said No she wouldn't that it would put them in jeopardy. Johnnie said that is the reason why we asked you to come on the show.... he quickly went to commercial and zaza wasn't on anymore.
