Female excision and male circumcision...

... the most barbaric and useless practices in existence.

I'm totally disgusted by this butchering. It's completely beyond me, why parents would put their kids through this ordeal. Kids should not be suffering in any case, let alone with their parents' consent.

True. Let them decide to do it as adults, if they wish.

Did you make coffee...? Make it!--Cheyenne.

Exactly.
MGM is not as severe as FGM, but that doesn't make it "good" or even "acceptable". I compare it to cutting off a finger vs cutting off a hand, and we should do neither to children.

If they still feel lke it for whatever religious / stupid reason, they can always do it when they are adult.

It's especially baffling that in the US, which is considered the flagship of Western progressiveness, MGM is done to more than half of the population for really stupid reasons like "it looks better" and "slightly easier to wash".

Indeed, it is often worse. Compare a notch in the clitoral hood, versus having your penis rot off (which is not uncommon in South Africa, where male genital cutting is a rite of passage).

This video is a good primer on how we should be talking about genital cutting:

Good video, and I agree 100% about where the line should be. One thing though, is I wonder where Type III MGM is performed, and what is its prevalence. I don't think any Westerners and anti-FGM-advocates are OK with that.

Why we often think of foreskin removal when we talk about MGM, and clitoris removal and/or sewing when we talk about FGM is because those seem to be the most common.
