The Number 9 Guy
Was he a reference to someone or something. I got the feeling he is, but I can't place it.
He's been appearing in the background of the show since the first episode. Originally, along with career chips, everyone was going to be revealed to be part of a numbered class system with 9 being the lowest, but this seemed too complicated once they got into production and it was basically dropped (much like how the career chips were moreorless washed over spare for a few callback gags).

Oh! That isn't anywhere close to what I thought. I figured he was one of the many sci-fi references. I hadn't noticed him in the show, but I'll be paying closer attention now. They throw some doozies in there.
