Rovdyr (A.K.A. Backwoods) is a Norwegian horror film and is the directing debut of Patrik Syversen. And what a way to make a debut!

It's The summer of 1974. Four young friends have planned a relaxing weekend out in the woods. At a remote truck stop they pick up a hitchhiker, who only after a short ride demands that they stop the car. They are terrified. Suddenly they are all ambushed and left unconscious. They wake up deep in the woods with no one around but the sound of a hunting horn. Someone is out hunting, and they are the prey

This film is yet again an awsome piece of horror from Scandinavian descent. 'Cause after for example Dead Snow and Fritt Vilt this is another good one.

Rovdyr starts off as the 'normal' slasher.. A group of youngsters travel to the woods in a hippie van and pick up a hitchiker during the trip. They also stop at a nasty, eerie, gas station and have some problems with the locals. Texas Chain Saw Massacre all over. But when the group gets attacked by a group of deranged hunters things start to get real serious and the film turns to be a very good backwoods slasher. It even starts to look a bit like the excellent Eden Lake. The tension is really good and frighting. The vibe in the Norwegian woods is amazing especially because of the continually threat of the 'hunters' hunting them down.

After I saw the poster I was expecting an absolute ode to the grindhouse cinema but it doesn't focus on that too much. The colors are very grey and pale which feels very raw. Another notable point is the very good gore. There are some gross scene's where limbs get crushed, or where INtestines turn to OUTtestines...

Rovdyr is an amzingly raw pearl from the Scandinavian horror cinema.
