Red Ribbons (Spoilers)

(Spoilers)

I haven't seen this topic mentioned anywhere. Maybe it's in Norwegian somewhere.

Anyway, I've just finished watching the film and noticed the following. In the van at the beggining of the film Mia takes out a piece of paper and reads (according to the English subtitles):

Mia: Let's find the rules and read them aloud!
Jorgen: Mia...
Mia: Daddy's advice. One: Follow the red ribbons. If we part, they'll lead us to the road. Two: Remember not to part 'cause it ain't smart.
Jorgen (grabbing the sheet): Three: Daddy very much prefers Mia to Jorgen.

The sheet then ends up with Camilla who reads it to herself.

So...

When they are in the woods there are red ribbons tied on several trees, but all the characters ignore them and they are never mentioned by anyone.

Are these red ribbons the usual way that trails are marked in Norwegian woodlands? If any Norwegians know this do let me know. If not, then how did Mia & Jorgen's dad know this piece of information would be useful?

Of course Camilla is the survivor, and also the one who quietly reads the rules to herself. I wonder if there was anyhting in there about finding knives randomly lying around...

Well, I'm from Sweden and here they mark trees or areas of forest that are to be cut down with these kinds of ribbons. My thought is that Mias father was thinking that if they are going to cut down the forest there should be a road around.. Trails usually have painted markings on the trees, in Sweden that is, not sure about Norway though..

they mark trails here in the USA with that plastic "ribbon" tape(not sticky).
its not the first that I have heard about a trail being marked with red or yellow
plastic ribbon tape.

also, like the other poster suggests, it is used for marking trees
for cutting
