I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie.

Maybe that's going too far. What I hated about this movie was the character of Lisa.

If anyone is out there thinking about writing or filming a horror movie, what you certainly should not do is make your lead character a spoiled little brat that gets everybody killed because she's too damn stupid to listen to anyone. She's probably the only person in the entire movie that actually deserved to die and she doesn't.

Naoko: I need you and your sister to stop the curse or others will die.
Lisa: Screw you crazy Asian woman. I'm young and pretty. I don't have to put up with your Asian malarkey.

*people die*

Lisa: Okay Asian woman, I want to help now.
Naoko: No matter what you see or hear, don't say anything.

*Naoko does the ritual*

Lisa: Screw this Asian woman, I'm young and pretty and I don't have to put up with your Asian malarkey.

*Naoko is about to be killed*

Naoko: Lisa! What the hell are you doing in that apartment while I'm out here getting killed for what seems to be at least 5 minutes?!
Lisa: Just waiting until you get killed before I decide to make a run for it!
Naoko: Oh, okay!

*Naoko is killed*

Naoko: Thanks a lot for not helping me Lisa you stupid bitch!

LOL!!

I kind of enjoyed the movie, but yes, I HATED Lisa. She was completely clueless.

She repeatedly skips off to screw her boyfriend while her stressed out brother is feverishly trying to get residents into the building so that he can still make money and keep a roof over their heads. On top of that, he seems to be the one primarily taking care of Rose.

She clearly can sense or is starting to figure out something is wrong in that apartment building, with the amount of people dying horribly. Naoko presents her an option to stop the curse, and she scurries away because she wants no part of it. So more people die horribly.

She finally asks for Naoko's help, only to suddenly have a problem with what Naoko is desperately asking them to do. Then stands in the room while Naoko is being painfully murdered by her possessed brother. I expected her to at LEAST come out of the room and shout "MAX! STOP!" But no...not even to save her brother from being possessed or them from being murdered by Kayako does she think MAYBE drinking the blood would be a good idea. No...the child is the only one smart enough for that.

Why they made Lisa so annoying, I don't know. I guess just for the sake of not having the curse go away.

When the hurly-burly's done. When the battle's lost and won.

It goes on to say that a typical preppy American girl like her can be a total douchebag than anyone else and is ignorant. Hollywood's horror movies tend to have female characters just as dumb and clueless as Lisa

Maybe Takashi Shimizu deliberately had the movie ruined as he himself could have thought the Grudge series were screwed and was tired of directing or producing movies featuring Kayako and Toshio the whole time.

there are SPOILERS in this post:

I agree that the Lisa character, both as written and as acted, was extremely annoying. It wasn't just that she was witlessly obstructionist, but that she was so SMUG about her witless obstructionism.

By the end of the movie, with the Japanese sister of the series' original Japanese murderous ghost becoming a murderous ghost herself---even though she had never (as the back story had it) been filled with negative spiritual forces as a child, as her sister had been---

---and yet with the murderous white-Westerner Max NOT becoming a murderous ghost---

---by then, I'd come to the conclusion that the filmmakers believed Lisa's smug obstructionist responses to the Japanese woman who was trying to help her, were perfectly justified.

In other words, I think the filmmakers believe that the ONLY proper reaction of a white Westerner to a Japanese person (or perhaps to any Asian person) is disdain, mistrust, and obstructionism.

In still simpler words: I think they are rather unpleasant little bigots.

[and by the way, I myself am a white Westerner.]

I know! I just watched this last night and I was just as frustrated as you when I watched that scene. All the little kid had to do was drink that stuff and all the murders and curse etc would be stoppe. Lisa was acting like the Japanese lady was asking her sister to brutally murder a pack of newborn kittens or something, geez. Lisa's character was annoying throughout the whole film. I was disappointed when the Japanese lady got killed because she was only trying to help, but I liked the last scene *spoilers* when Lisa was hugging her sister and she turned out to be the grudge thing hehehe.

Great post!

I'm watching it now, and I can't tell you how furious I am that this witch didn't even TRY to stop her brother from murdering Naoko. I expected her to run out and hit him on the back or something . . . . try to incapcitate him, but the bitch did nothing!

I want her dead and her bratty sister DEAD!

Naoko was the only good part of the film. She was pretty hot and it was something nice to look at and await for .

haha yup I agree with the above post, the saving grace of this movie was Naoko. ;)

I always wondered if drinking the blood would've been a proper solution to stopping the curse. Because really, wasn't such an act the reason the evil was able to manifest in the first place because of all the concentrated evil. If the evil could manifest from the previous child, it could probably just as easily manifest from the new child as the curse is probably a lot stronger with each person it claims and it has claimed a lot of people since it's original manifestation.

I'm not saying the curse wouldn't take some time to fully break free, but I imagine that blood drinking ritual would be a temporary band-aid.

You're missing an important point. The blood would contain Kayako inside Rose... that was Naoko's plan all along. Basically to stop the curse, she'd have to sacrifice Rose by putting Kayako in her. Naoko was lying when she said Rose would not be harmed.

Naoko was hiding these details from Lisa because she knew that if she knew the truth, she wouldn't go through with the plan.

Lisa was rightly suspicious of Naoko.

I agree with you about Lisa just waiting there and letting Naoko get killed though.

^^ Totally this.

And you're all insane if you would, in the same situation with the same limited knowledge, let your little sister drink that. I sure as hell wouldn't.

It's like you people never watched the flashbacks to the 'exorcisms' when the original girl was given the blood.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings.

Just dropping by to note the rip off of The Ring with the crawling long haired woman. Except in The Ring she was actually scary.
