Why are there ruins and highways and rusty cars?

I thought this was thousands of years in the future, not 200 years. When I first saw some of the pictures, I assumed it must be set before "First king of Shannara". But apparently it's set after Sword of Shannara? Why did add the highways/buildings/burnt up helicopters, etc?

Being that in SOS Allanon indicated that the Great Wars (Nuclear War) took place some thousands of years ago, Terry Brooks probably felt the need to honor that time frame for the show. But he did put an awful lot of emphasis on olden time structures for the show after he tied the events of old America to the events of Shannara and probably over done it a bit. Most likely they wanted to show the appearance that our current modern technology of buildings and structures could possibly withstand the tests of that period of time, not considering of course that there would be so many complaints about it. Would have probably been better for the show if he changed the timeline from thousands of years to perhaps, hundreds of years to reflect the apparent lack of decay of the structures. Me personally I am not bothered by this one bit, but I do get peoples struggle with this.

Because they assumed the target audience were too stupid to notice. They were spot on. The millennials are THAT dumb.

reply

or they've been trained not to care about detail.

reply

lol "trained". You say this as if making ADHD a regular part of society was a good thing.

It's laughable. The show is set thousands of years into the future, and yet I have seen more badly rusted vehicles languishing in the woods behind my grandpa's old place. Also, The 100 is set 97 years after an apocalypse and yet ruins in that show look older than some seen in The Shannara Chronicles.

All semblance of authenticity goes right out the window when they easily fall through the roof of the school auditorium, and they claim it was all sealed and preserved to the point that sheets of paper look as fresh as the day they were printed. Two thousand years of idiots trampling their way over hill and dale, and neither a person nor thing ever once fell through such a brittle ceiling, and no moisture, mildew or even dust ever contaminated anything within?

If the place was built that solidly, they would've never fallen inside, and yet a wayward possum would've could've done so. Al&Miles certainly have long enjoyed the disappointing experience of both having and eating their cake. They must be overjoyed to be be back at it after butchering the myth of Superman.

Did you notice there was balloons in the school too? lol

reply

I thought it was all magic.

reply

It is. Magic preserved some things and not others. Like Allanon can go to sleep naked in an open cave for 30 years and wake up with snow on him.

These kids talk like 21st Century kids so the show is not going for Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones immersion, anyway. It's kind of like in Harry Potter "You can make tents and bags bigger on the inside and travel back in time but can't pause time for an impaled house elf."

That scene was utterly ridiculous, only rivaled by when they played an old Star Trek tape that somehow still worked after those thousands of years...

I really wish they at least attempted to follow the books more. I mean, the books weren't the best either, but much better than this mess.

However, I probably will watch the next season when/if it airs, see how they try to adapt the Wishsong, since they can't come close to the books going further... It's just a big trainwreck.

reply

Agree.

But then again, this is based on a 70s book and people were not as sophisticated

The tree has been there 2000 years, so the elves had to evolve from humans long before then. Everything would be gone in 200 years.. doesnt add up just another show with plot holes
