The first couple seasons were incredible. A new benchmark in making astronomy interesting...
But after all the 'big topics' were covered...the series began struggling with finding compelling topics.
In comes the 'bag of tricks' such as the "Countdown" episode.
It just stinks.
Now it's about ancient aliens, soon you'll have psychic/ghosts...
Then finally: Ice Road Truckers.
JUST GIVE THIS SHOW A DIGNIFIED CANCELLATION ALREADY!
I haven't seen the last season, but even some of the earlier ones were really weak.
"Sex in space." How absurd to have an entire episode about this.
"What would happen if the moon vanished?" Well, the moon is not going to just vanish one day, so what is the point?
"I've seen things that would make you want to write a book on how to puke."
Don't be daft. Of course the moon isn't just going to vanish, but the whole point would to show how the Earth would behave without a moon. It's a show about space, and the moon and the earth have a connection, so people hearing how that connection works and the affect of the connection are important.
As for sex in space? Not exactly a hard hitting topic but if one day people want to live in space, sex isn't just going to stop being apart of human nature, so knowing how space living will change (or not change) a basic human urge (and still the most prominent way that the human race keeps living on) is kind of important as well.
Totally agree. I really liked the earlier seasons and I wanted to keep liking it but they really didn't make it easy. Some of the topics seemed to be far too gimmicky and even when they dealt with interesting topics they tended to approach it with gimmicky metaphors and random location trips. Plus the bigger names in popular science stopped appearing (Hard to imagine Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Michio Kaku touching the current show with a barge pole).
Once they started doing countdowns and blatantly ripping off the "Wonders of the solar system/universe" series I knew they had run out of even the gimmicky ideas and now as we have all noticed, they seem to have just turned in to Ancient Aliens. Such a waste. I'm sure there are more things they could cover, but at this point it is far too late to salvage.

Ancient Aliens is a completely different show, not in its 8th or 9th season and has no connection to The Universe. It is a stupid show, one based on completely unsound pseudoscience.
