They Don't Get Much Worst Than This.

Those who lauded this film, must have either been involved in its production, stoned, talentless, or all the above. I've seen better affects on videos created for YouTube; and the only thing better than the existing dialog, would be if the movie were silent; in fact, I would have rather had to read subtitles, than to hear the results of a poorly written script. I can't think of one nice thing to say about this flick. They don't get much worse than this. To the writers and directors...Improve your game or stick to porn, where at least no special affects or dialog is necessary.

well what kind of film were you expecting from the title Machine Girl?
a girl with a machine gun for an arm, it's not going to be the next Psycho is it?

this film was very well made and the they had some really original ideas, try finding another film with a bra-drill!
if people laughed at this film, then it was a success, it wasn't trying to be serious and did exactly what it was trying to do. You must have been in the wrong state of mind while you were watching this, or you just don't have a sense of humor..

What kind of film was I expecting from the title, Machine Girl-a girl with a machine gun for an arm? In all sincerity, I was expecting about as much as I did from a movie called, Planet Terror, and a girl with a machine gun for a leg...Nothing good!

Difference between the two however, aside from who created it, was the fact that one was pure fun; which Planet Terror was, while the other was, pure stupidity. If someone laughs at another's stupidity, was the one being stupid successful at being funny? Maybe, but not likely.

As for original ideas...Name one! English dubbed has already been done. Weapons to replace missing limbs, already done. Over-dramatized blood spraying, already done. Girl seeks to avenge murdered brother? I can't recall whether this has already been done, but chances are, it has.

"It wasn't trying to be serious," you said. Well, it wasn't trying to be entertaining either; and since a movie should at least be that, if it was trying to be entertaining, it was a feeble attempt.

reply

ok, so you knew what film to expect, an over the top bloody film.
even though it is so clear what kind of film you were going to see, you watched it anyway?

And comparing this to Planet Terror? do you just not like film where limbs have been replaced by weapons? do you also have a problem with the Evil Dead series?

ok the copy i watched was the original language with english subs. of course over used blood has been used, most stuff has in cinema now, but what about the flying guillotine, drill bra, how about that its use of BOTH Yakuza and ninjas?
there you go, i named 3.

please explain how it wasn't trying to be entertaining???

Basically, you just need to write these down and stay away from them...i don't want to catch you on here bitchin about how much you dislike them after warning you to stay away.

there's nothing wrong with disliking this style of film but when you know what you're getting into before you rent/buy it and then dislike it, it's no ones fault but your own. these are made because there is a fan base out there that appreciates this type of film.

which one is more of a slut?

and Machine Girl was not influenced by Planet Terror at all, before you go on about the machine gun arm, one of Iguchi's previous films called Sukeban Boy was released in 2006, and featured a girl with both her legs cut off and replaced with machine guns, so lets just say if anything, Rodriguez was influences by him ;)

You do not know what films he likes, and you certainly do not know what he has time for.

grouping two films together because they have one similarity is the dumbest thing to do, if you doing that with MG and PT then why not compare The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Hitchcock's Psycho? Idiot.

Several days ago, I began this thread after watching "The Machine Girl," and since then, periodically stop by to see what others are saying about the movie. Not for nothing, but everyone's entitled to their opinions; and after reading the posts, I can't help but wonder if, when race actually becomes an issue, what the intellect is of one who might find "The Machine Girl" entertaining.

There ARE such things as bad movies, as long as there are standards that define what makes a movie good; and regardless of how many people liked "The Machine Girl," that doesn't make it a good movie overall, except to the individual viewer.

Perhaps some of what makes this movie entertaining, I initially thought might be cultural; but after watching my wifes responses to both "Planet Terror", and "The Machine Girl", It's obvious that it isn't. You see, my wife just happens to be native born Japanese; and while she and I both share the same opinions on both movies (Planet Terror was fun, while Machine girl was just stupid,) we also disagree for example on the original Godzilla; which she loved as a kid, and I hated for its obvious phoniness.

So what does this mean? Obviously and objectively, different people look for different things in a movie. If we compare both movies on a serious note, realistically speaking, neither is plausible; yet at the same time, some of us, like seeing the implausible, at least presented in a believable fashion; While some couldn't care less.

As a boy, when watching Godzilla, it was obvious to me that it was a man in a rubber suit-something I might have been able to overlook and enjoy the movie nonetheless, were the creature also not engaging in martial arts moves. Likewise, perhaps "The Machine Girl," at least for me, might have been enjoyable, were it not for the awful dialog and the overdone blood spraying. Planet terror had several creative elements working in its favor. 1. For Americans and otherwise, watching the movie, it had several well known actors-who as such, acted their parts well. 2, and unlike The Machine Girl, it had a dialog that didn't make the individual characters look like morons. 3. Planet Terror weaved several normally separate elements into one story that rather than clash with each-other, mixed well. A.The 70's "B" movie appeal. B.The Zombie element and the gore associated with the zombie genre. C.The rogue soldier element. D.The Biological Weapons Elements. E.The Maniacal Arms Dealer Element.
F. The Sex Appeal element. G.The Soundtrack Element. H.The Tastefully executed F/X Element. And lastly, the comedy element of a former stripper, first clumsily plodding along on a table leg to substitute a missing limb- to eventually assisting to combat the forces of evil with a machine gun leg.

I will state preemptively, that I've seen independent films that despite the presence of one well known actor, but rather, good actors with a good script to work with, made an likable film - unlike the Machine Girl, who might have had at least one well known actor (unknown to me,) with shoddy F/X and a poor script.

I my opinion, what determines good here, is not folks like myself presumably taking ourselves and life too seriously - rather, folks like yourselves having standards paralleling the chimps need for a tree limb and a banana, to be entertained.

I'll actually be watching this tonight, but because I expect it to be good, because seriously, no, but because I expect it to be entertaining. Funny, actually. But, then, I have a morbid sense of humor and, even if I don't like a film, I usually have a blast making fun of said film that I don't like. Easy to please? Probably. I get bored. A less intelligent person than you? Not in any quantitative way that you can prove.

reply

I'm so glad I watched "Planet Terror" this weekend, because now I know that it's nowhere near as entertaining as "The Machine Girl" - not even close.

It's movies like "Planet Terror" that have convinced me that American cinema is far from occupying the same entertainment value as other foreign industries. Anyone with any taste in film already knows that American art-house, horror, and romance movies suck to high heaven, leaving other countries to make virtually all significant contributions to those genres. I figured that if Hollywood can do anything well, it must be no-brain actioners. As luck would have it, I was in the mood for some over-the-top action/horror with a smoking hot stripper sporting a leg-cannon and blowing away dozens of baddies. "Planet Terror" looked to be the perfect film. There's only one little problem: All the good parts are in the trailer.

That's not necessarily bad if you get a lot MORE of it when you actually see the movie, but in the case of "Planet Terror" there's almost nothing worth seeing outside of the trailer itself. For example, in the trailer you see Rose McGowan (with her machine gun) spin on the ground, jump high in the air, shoot a rocket, blow up a truck, and spin out of the way. The movie itself has those moments, but the only additional contribution McGowan has are a few extra sprays of bullets. That's it. With regards to everyone else, there's practically no action for the first 90 minutes of this movie. What little there is lasts for mere seconds. (The truck scene was decent and nicely gory though.) Near the end, we finally get to see Rose sport that machine gun, but the whole thing is over in 2 measly minutes. Easily the most pathetic attempt at a finale I've seen in quite a while.

I'm still annoyed that the machine gun leg got so little screen time. The filmmakers missed a golden opportunity to create one of the most insane action scenes ever made. It's almost like they just got lazy and said, "Let's film just enough to make the trailer look sweet." In reality the finale is much too tame for its own good. And for goodness sakes, could you at least make it longer than 2 minutes! Listen, have someone with a brain coordinate an action scene and have Rose do all sorts of crazy stuff with her machine gun for about 6 minutes. Is that so difficult to understand? I'm personally perplexed at how they can screw this up. Somehow, they did. On the other hand, "The Machine Girl" had action scenes that were actually exciting and lengthy (especially the last one).

Bad acting, a poor screenplay, and undeveloped characters can be overlooked if there's enough wild action and horror to keep things moving. Such is not the case with "Planet Terror." There's way too much time spent on stupidity and not enough time on the action and horror. There's one scene where a zombie walks up to a doctor, pops a big zit onto his face, then walks away. I'm sorry, but that's just really, really stupid. There's another scene where a woman breaks her wrist while attempting to open her car door. Again really, really stupid. Even when there's a good moment (like a wooden spike through the eye), it's followed by something lame (a penis melting onto the ground). "The Machine Girl" on other hand had stupid moments that were actually funny. How can you not laugh at tempura-fried limbs or cute girls puking intestines out of their mouths? It's a lot more funny than watching Tarantino sporting his typically poor, incredibly annoying acting chops.

Another big negative for "Planet Terror" was the absence of a formidable antagonist. First they're fighting zombies, but that whole conflict is scrapped completely when they begin fighting some pseudo-mutant army dudes. The scriptwriter should have included some threatening bad guys, whether it be an increase in the number of zombies or perhaps a more intimidating mutant of some sort. The action is just too safe. The zombies (or army dudes) stand in the distance while the protagonists gun them down with heavy artillery. That's about it. A formidable antagonist would have made things much more interesting and exciting. "The Machine Girl" had loads of formidable opponents (the ninjas, the drill bra lady, the possessed parents, etc.) that blow away anything scene in "Planet Terror."

With "Planet Terror", you basically get a few minutes of juicy insanity that is smothered by 90+ minutes of mediocrity. There's simply no way this movie will satiate the needs of those who expect more entertainment than what's included in the trailer. "The Machine Girl" has everything in the trailer x 10!

No contest.

In Planet Terror's defense I'd like to mention that alot of the stupidity and silliness was intended.

The idea of it was to emulate a grindhouse movie. More often than not, old exploitation flicks would spend much of the trailer showing all the action scenes in the movie in an attempt to get people to go see it.

The machine gun leg, after being featured in every single piece of promotional material possible, would have grown a little old anyway had it been featured throughout most of the movie. PT was a perfectly fine Hollywood No-Brainer action horror with plenty of juicy blood effects to satisfy me.

Machine Girl and Planet Terror equal each other IMO.

I don't know why there should be any kind of comparison made between both Planet Terror and Machine Girl. I enjoyed them both, personally, and entrepreneur2000, your experiment is a little flawed.

Depending on how long your wife has been in the States (assuming you're in the States) she is now, culturally, an American. Her tastes towards things made in Japan in the last several years won't be relevant because she hasn't been there in the last several years. Now if she had a younger brother who still lived in Japan, maybe he would be a good test subject.

Now, don't get me wrong, this movie was technically dreadful. Almost everything about it was a cliche (or should I say "homage"), the digital effects were pretty sub-par, and the tempura arm made me groan, but it held my interest and I got through it without even thinking of turning it off... or going to sleep (I watched it at 3 in the morning)... or anything.

The movie definitely had a language that only it's core audience would understand. The delayed dismemberment cuts, the poses and introduction before fighting, and I'm sure some of the hair style choices were all anime inspired... not to mention the copious amounts of blood that would spray from the equivalent of a paper cut. It was kinda like seeing Samuel Jackson in a 'fro in Pulp Fiction. The only difference being that not many non-Japanese fanatics/"otaku" would get the references. That's probably where the movie fell short, but I don't think the film makers cared much. Because they were probably out to just make a fan film; a love letter to everything they used to like to watch as a kid. I think in that regard it succeeded.

LOL, that is one of the most ridiculous and moronic paragraphs I have ever read! You actually considered that only Japanese people enjoy Machine Girl? LOL! Maybe you should stick to American movies and leave foreign movies to people who understand how to appreciate them.

Why the hell are you comparing Planet Terror with MG anyway? Just because there is a lot of blood and gore and the main character has a weapon instead of a limb? Shall we include Evil Dead as well then? Evil Dead and Planet Terror are survival movies and MG is revenge driven. The plots are completely different. Planet Terror is an enjoyable movie but The Machine Girl is art. It's one of those movies that comes along, under the radar, and when you watch it you realise that it is the movie you have been waiting to see for 5 years or more. I'd happily trade 1000 Planet Terrors for this little gem, The Machine Girl.

What amazes me most about this movie is the passion people have for knocking it and calling the ones of us who do, monkeys and idiots... you have a lot more available time to come on here and bash it then i do to defend it.

Why do you care so much what we think of it? I mean, if you don't like it then fine. if you do, then great. don't assume that we do not like other types of movies just because we can sit and enjoy a bit of mindless fun... if i had to sit and critiques every single thing in every single movie i ever watched , (cough**elitist**cough) I wouldn't Love movie's as much as I do... for one, I just don't care enough to worry about the little things when a movie is called "machine girl"! We knew what it was going into it and expected nothing more!

another thing that amazes me about people that come into forums only to thrash and bash is the lack of research these "elitists" perform before watching a movie...if these people are so smart, why is it that almost every movie they watch, horrendous and idiotic??? I can't tell you the last movie I absolutely despised.... becuase I come here and read reviews.. not troll posts, but genuine reviews made by honest respectful viewers... I check other movies these people have watched and if they tend to like the same things I do, then I watch the movie... it really doesnt take that much effort to do and you'll save tons of hours of your life... it beats becoming a whiny baby bitch that lives on these boards with nothing to do but troll around starting race wars and insulting people based on a movie about a girl with a gun for an arm.....A GUN FOR AN ARM!!!! it's not Shakespeare people... shes has an arm...that's a gun!!!

Come on people... if you would do a little research before watching a movie, you wouldnt be on here whinning about it, becuase you would know what you're getting into BEFORE you watch it!!!

And comparing this to anything else is a pointless waste of time. no matter which limb is a gun...or a chainsaw...or a knife... because everyone is going to have a different opinion on what they like best and why.

@ entrepreneur2000

“Several days ago, I began this thread after watching "The Machine Girl," and since then, periodically stop by to see what others are saying about the movie. Not for nothing, but everyone's entitled to their opinions; and after reading the posts, I can't help but wonder if, when race actually becomes an issue, what the intellect is of one who might find "The Machine Girl" entertaining.”

You sound like my Uncle who tells me the movies I watch are stupid because of their implausibility but thinks "Lord of the Rings" and "Narnia" are masterpieces because they have Christian messages in them and use CGI.

“There ARE such things as bad movies, as long as there are standards that define what makes a movie good; and regardless of how many people liked "The Machine Girl," that doesn't make it a good movie overall, except to the individual viewer.”

I would agree with you on this to a point. However, not all movies strive to be a good movie. Some strive to be good films and are good films. Some strive to be good films and turn out to be bad films. Some, like in the case of “The Machine Girl,” intentionally strive to be a bad movie for the purpose of hitting a specific market. You cannot deny that in this “The Machine Girl” achieves its goal.

“Perhaps some of what makes this movie entertaining, I initially thought might be cultural; but after watching my wifes responses to both "Planet Terror", and "The Machine Girl", It's obvious that it isn't. You see, my wife just happens to be native born Japanese; and while she and I both share the same opinions on both movies (Planet Terror was fun, while Machine girl was just stupid,) we also disagree for example on the original Godzilla; which she loved as a kid, and I hated for its obvious phoniness.”

You’re wife actually is not the intended target audience. The film was produced by an American company who was looking at what was popular among American Asian film fans. Sure the writer was Japanese and it is a very Japanese movie, but it is tailored to American preferences in Japanese films.

Also, I do not like your treatment of Godzilla. I am a huge Godzilla fan and while you can say that about the 60s Godzilla films after "Destroy All Monsters" and the 70s Godzilla movies (except maybe the Mechagodzilla films...that's open to debate), if you are at all referring to the original Godzilla film I think you need to take a closer look. “Gojira” is a masterpiece and a metaphorical take on the suffering of the average Japanese citizen during WWII. There are obvious allusions to the fire raids and the whole movie carries a strong message against nuclear weapons which, if only the world could heed its warning, so much suffering could be avoided. The fact you “hated” Godzilla for “obvious phoniness” shows that you are quite superficial when deciding what film is good and which are bad and focus, like most Americans, on the special effects. Realism is only one small and relatively new view on what makes a film great, and a greatly flawed on at that if made a standard by which all films should be judged. Also, the special effects man behind the Godzilla films from 1954-1969 was none other than the special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya who started two special effects booms in Japan and has had an influence on special effects that lasts to this day much like Willis O’Brien. His special effects in the original Godzilla film and in the other Godzilla films he worked on were creative and in many cases revolutionary for the time. He did not have CGI at his disposal and had to find an in camera way to do almost everything except the energy weapons. It was not like today where the special effects director can wimp out and say "they can fix it in post."

“So what does this mean? Obviously and objectively, different people look for different things in a movie. If we compare both movies on a serious note, realistically speaking, neither is plausible; yet at the same time, some of us, like seeing the implausible, at least presented in a believable fashion; While some couldn't care less.”

Sure. Different people look at different things in a film. I agree with you there. Your tone is extremely condescending though (though your word use does show you have a really excellent command of the English language which is something people on imdb forums do seem to lack as a whole).

“As a boy, when watching Godzilla, it was obvious to me that it was a man in a rubber suit-something I might have been able to overlook and enjoy the movie nonetheless, were the creature also engaging in martial arts moves.”

Well, if Godzilla didn’t appeal to you because there were no martial arts moves in it then you should have been watching Ultraman, also by special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya. The fact you would watch Godzilla only if it had martial arts moves in it shows you are quite superficial when it comes to films and seem to have a very American view on what makes a film good (realism, martial arts in Asian movies, and “good” special effects are three things Americans seem hung up on when it comes to films)

"Likewise, perhaps "The Machine Girl," at least for me, might have been enjoyable, were it not for the awful dialog and the overdone blood spraying."

That was the point. Have you seen Kill Bill? Have you seen Tarantino’s films (I would assume so if you saw Planet Terror)? Tarantino always rips off Asian films (where do you think the blood sprays in his films come from?) and several of the miniature buildings in “Kill Bill Volume II” come directly from the set of “Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla” (2002). Chiaki Kuriyama is in “Kill Bill” as Go Go Yubari only because she was in the famous Japanese film “Battle Royale” and Tarantino also wanted to get Kou Shibasaki in “Kill Bill” as well because she was in “Battle Royale” as well. The “Kill Bill” films were made entirely as homage to the long line of 70s Japanese female revenge films (which “The Machine Girl” also descends from).

"Planet terror had several creative elements working in its favor. And lastly, the comedy element of a former stripper, first clumsily plodding along on a table leg to substitute a missing limb- to eventually assisting to combat the forces of evil with a machine gun leg."

Um…yeah, you missed the point of “The Machine Girl” by a mile. “The Machine Girl” has a big name actor (porn star actually) who also starred in “Sukeban Boy” and all the actors acted their parts exactly as they were supposed to. This isn’t a Shakespeare play and it doesn’t pretend to be either. “The Machine Girl” is supposed to have dialogue like that and those of us who liked it knew that from the beginning. 3. “The Machine Girl” weaved several normally separate elements into one story that rather than clash with each-other, mixed well. A. The 70s "B" movie appeal. B. The gore associated with the sukeban revenge film genre. C. The school girl out for revenge on males that have wronged her. D. The ninja yakuza element E. The auto shop workers building the arm gun F. The Sex Appeal element. G. The Soundtrack Element (it isn’t Beethoven but it is what it is supposed to be for this film) H. The rough special effects element. And lastly, the comedy element of a school girl literally blowing apart not just ninja and not just yakuza but ninja yakuza. This is not the first time most of these elements have been mixed together (see the Korean independent film “Killing Machine” and the Rica Trilogy for example).

"I will state preemptively, that I've seen independent films that despite the presence of one well known actor, but rather, good actors with a good script to work with, made an likable film - unlike the Machine Girl, who might have had at least one well known actor (unknown to me,) with shoddy F/X and a poor script."

Again, missing the point. “The Machine Girl” did exactly what it claimed to be doing from the beginning.

"I my opinion, what determines good here, is not folks like myself presumably taking ourselves and life too seriously - rather, folks like yourselves having standards paralleling the chimps need for a tree limb and a banana, to be entertained."

Don’t you call me a mindless chimp. This shows that you have no idea who you are talking about. I graduated film school and I personally consider “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” to be the best film I’ve ever seen due to its high level script, its realism, its humour, its music (based on Vivaldi), its art design, and the way it hits everything a film snob is looking for in a film. I consider “Battle Royale” to be my favourite film and another modern classic which, despite a bit of a flawed ending in film snob terms, is a truly great film that I feel everyone needs to see at one point in their life as it contains so many good messages that we as a population tend to over look. Other films I consider to be good films (based on film snob standards) are “Gojira,” “Oldboy,” “The Wizard of OZ,” “King Kong” (1933), “Jurassic Park,” and “Jaws” just to name a few. I value film as art and do not like the way the average North American film has become nothing more than a quick way to make a buck. Despite the producers of “The Machine Girl” using the film to make a quick buck, I see within it a true labour of love by the cast and filmmakers, much like I did in “Ebola Syndrome” as well. That is what I feel is lacking in the general American film as of late and it is something no amount of money poured into the film can hide.

Ebola Syndrome was a total blast. Anthony Wong was hilarious! That movie was so good and so funny yet totally disturbing at the same time. Now I want to watch it again...

yeah, i have it on my wish list. i was expecting something a little more "zombie" when i put it in, but by the time it was over i was so grateful it wasn't. he always plays the biggest ass in the universe and does it so well. you cant help but kind of cheer him on while hoping he got what he had coming to him.

Considering the topic creator liked that CGI mess of a bad-parody of a film that is Planet Terror, his opinion about The Machine Girl lacks any credibility whatsoever.

"I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder."

Did you see it dubbed, or do you speak Japanese ?

reply

I'm not sure who you're addressing that question too but me personally watch all foreign movies with subtitles and original sound. I don't speak any foreign languages.

overdubbing takes so much away from the movie to me... there are two movies i watch with both subtitles and overdubbing. those are Bio-zombie (due to the hilariousness of the dubbing) and Spirited Away which actually has really great American overdubbing.

entrepreneur2000: Several days ago, I began this thread after watching "The Machine Girl," and since then, periodically stop by to see what others are saying about the movie.

>Why??? If you hate it so much, why do you care? I saw that Mandy Moore piece of crap "Because I Said So", hated it, and got on with my life. I haven't mentioned it until now, just to make my point. Why are YOU so obsessed with something you supposedly hate? If you hate it so much, why can't you bring yourself to stop talking about it?<

There ARE such things as bad movies, as long as there are standards that define what makes a movie good; and regardless of how many people liked "The Machine Girl," that doesn't make it a good movie overall, except to the individual viewer.

>And your point is, what exactly? That your personal standards of what defines a "good movie" are the standard by which films should be judged?<

>That's quite a scientific study you've got going on there. ONE American didn't like it, and also ONE Japanese didn't like it, therefore, its entertainment value (or lack thereof) can't be cultural. You should work for Nasa or something.<

I my opinion, what determines good here, is not folks like myself presumably taking ourselves and life too seriously - rather, folks like yourselves having standards paralleling the chimps need for a tree limb and a banana, to be entertained.

>Dude, that paragraph doesn't even make sense. Are you making some kind of point?

Awwww...isn't it sweet. I think SOMEONE's got a wee little crush on machine girl. Meethinks thou doth protest too much. Face it, dude. You're obsessed. Like a Catholic Priest who can't keep his hands off little boys. Like a Republican senator who cruises bathroom stalls on the "downlow". Admit it. You love Machine Girl. You can't stop thinking about it. But NO! Its sooo naughty! And you certainly can't admit your obsession to your sweet little wife. So what do you do? You take out your rage on those of us who are mentally balanced enough to genuinely enjoy it without shame. Classic case of PROJECTION.

Prove me wrong. I'll bet you a million dollars that you can't stop talking about it.

For the record, I loved Machine Girl. I laughed my ass off.<

I been watching movies for quite along time and there's always going to be that one person who will dislike a film for whatever reason. However, if the majority loves the movie then its all good. My vote is in, I love machine girl!

"They don't get much WORST than this."

'Nuff said.

reply

Wow. I have just learned that I am stoned, talentless, and, most surprisingly, I am apparently involved in the production. Must have been while I was stoned since I don't remember that.
Thanks for letting me know. Appreciated.

reply

I was also involved in the production, when do we get paid?

Hey, this guy's not gonna leak all over my ice cream, is he?

reply

Well, as the Producer I tell you no one got paid except the cleaning crew, but if you really insist we can cut off your arm free of charge !

reply

If you ask me, they don't get much better than this. Machine Girl makes most bid budget Hollywood movies like Iron Man (which is excellent by big budget Hollywood standards) look like a spec of dust compared to the greatness of the Machine Girl.
