Never shown or released in the USA. Why?

It's now 2011, three years after "The Devil's Whore" was shown in the UK, and the series has never been seen in the US or released here on DVD. I finally got hold of an import DVD, and was blown away by this series. (See my review.) It's a real shame that this story seems destined to remain virtually unknown on this side of the Atlantic.

HBO was a partner on this project; I can't understand why they didn't air it on HBO. It would fit in well among previous projects aired on HBO, such as Rome, and the Elizabeth I miniseries starring Helen Mirren.

HBO has developed a real pattern in recent years of co-producing British TV movies and miniseries, and then not broadcasting them here. Or if they do, they dump them unceremoniously on HBO 2 for a couple of airings, briefly put them on HBO On Demand, and then poof. The Tom Hardy film Stuart: A Life Backwards and Stephen Poliakoff's films Joe's Palace & Capturing Mary both got the latter treatment. No dvd release for them as yet in the US. HBO also co-produced another 2008 miniseries, The Passion, and like The Devil's Whore, it hasn't made any kind of appearance over here either. And those aren't the only ones.

There must be some sort of strategy behind these decisions, but I'm baffled as to what it could be. HBO Films is also involved in producing feature films, but those movies pretty much always end up on HBO itself, and not years later either. So why invest in all this UK content and then let it wither on the vine like they do?

Makes no sense. Devil's Whore would have been a great piece for them to offer in their schedule.

It aired on "Ovation" this month (September 2013) in the USA. And we also managed to rename the title, because I guess "whore" is so dirty.

It's the The Devil's Mistress here. Weird!
