Start of Pixar's decline.

Pixar's movies, while still entertaining, have gone downhill over the last several offerings and this is the one that started it, in my opinion. The movie was boring with two annoying and unlikeable main characters (The dog was OK). Plus, the movie kept beating you over the head with the death of the wife. It was depressing from start to finish.

I think Pixar's decline has been heavily exaggerated, but I also think their reputation as a perfect animation company was exaggerated too. Up was certainly not part of any decline, it was praised across the board and rightfully deserved it. The company still has one of the top two best track records among animated film companies. Of course not everyone will love everything they make but that's always been true. I for one never thought Monsters Inc. was a great film, it's rather mediocre actually. I still have more trust in Pixar than most other big companies in animation. People need to get over this idea that Pixar has some perfect Golden Age or is in some Dark Age. Neither are true, they're just a company that makes top quality CG films to the best of their ability. Each film has it's supporters and detractors, but that's movies for ya.

One of my complaints is that they seem to be more focused on the quality of the animation than the quality of the story. "The good dinosaur" is a perfect example of this. The animation is fantastic, to the point of realism. But the story was bad. It took me two viewings to finish this film, as I got bored halfway through and started watching TV instead.

I had my issues with The Good Dinosaur too, though it wasn't the worst for me and there was still plenty of good. Even so, that's just one film. The only other Pixar film I can think of that's more visual than substance is Brave, which is probably the bottom film for me. But hey, both of those films have fan bases too, so it's all subjective in the end I guess.

Do you seriously think Up is boring? Do you have an attention span of a retarded child, or are you just too used to watching action movies and skipping channels constantly on TV?...

If you think Up is the decline of Pixar, you're nuts. Up is one of Pixar's best, and a near perfect film. What you said about The Good Dinosaur is true though. But the story is what makes Up so great, not the animation (despite being beautiful as always)

What's with all the hate? I just think that the main characters were uninteresting and the movie constantly kept on beating you over the head with the wife's death. It was depressing, and that's not why I watch Pixar movies.
And the only reason I skip channels is due to the inordinate amount of commercials on TV. Of course, with DVR's that's not an issue anymore.

Up is not boring, but it's not very good, either. Unlike earlier films like Monsters Inc, the attempts a humour fall flat most of the time and are actually pretty irritating. The premise about him getting his house to a waterfall in South America is 'kooky' in the worse kind of way.

On top of this none of the main characters is particularly likeable, so there's no reason to care. But yeah, I probably only think this because I like Michael Bay movies or something, right? Also, the 'retarded child' line was real classy. You seem like just the sort of person I'd listen to about the magic of Pixar.

This is all your opinion, i thought the comedy it did have was hilarious, it isnt really a comedy and it doesnt try to be one, but it certainly has its laughs. The premise is about as original as it can be, so what is not to like. I loved every character, and i definitely cared about the main 2.

For me, I'll never understand the love for Monsters Inc. It is Pixar's most boring, predictable, and surprisingly unoriginal film. It's not even really funny despite supposedly being a comedy. I know this is just my opinion, but I can usually see why people like certain films I don't. I can't figure this one out. I'll take Up and it's infinitely better laughs and heart any day.

I counted one decent visual gag in Up, where the old men are fighting and their backs go at the same time and then one spits his false teeth at the other. That was funny.

Other than that there are endless dog jokes, which probably appeal to tedious pet owners I guess. The dogs keep saying 'squirrel'. I didn't get it at first. Now I do, and it still isn't funny. The scary dog has an annoying high pitched voice. Probably funnier on paper.

Monsters inc is funny.

Comedy is quite subjective and highly based on preferences of course. That said, you didn't plead much of a case. You gave no examples of humor from Monsters and have a rather narrow view of Up's varied humor.

But the humour in Up isn't varied. It's all old people or animal jokes. I don't find either all that amusing.

The leads in Monsters inc. are played by comic actors with good comic timing and the humour is varied between very funny slapstick such as the opening scene, and clever verbal humour. I could describe he scenes I found funny, of which there are many, but like you said, comedy is subjective, so here wouldn't be a lot of point. It's nice you found Up funny, I just happened not to.

So at least you concede your opinion is not to be taken as fact then? Cause your OP came off as that, hence the rage of the replies.

For me UP demonstrates a deeper understanding of animal behaviour of dogs and parrots that makes it amusing. And has things to say about growing old, mourning your loved ones and having the courage to move on.
That sets it easily above monsters inc.

I'll never understand how anyone can call a movie like Monster's Inc unoriginal or boring. It's classic Pixar, along with the Toy Story movies, Finding Nemo, and the Incredibles.

reply

You know I do wonder if Monsters Inc. would have been as well received had it been a post Cars film. The most loved Pixar films are often the pre-Cars films so it would seem that nostalgia is starting to become a factor for those films as they are old enough now. Still though, it's not my place to tell others what films they should or shouldn't love, I should stop thinking too much into this.

You're dumb. This film is excellent in all respects.
