This could have went to theaters

I really enjoyed this movie. It was a lot better than most straight to video films. I think if this movie had better cinematography and brushed up the script a tiny bit and added some famous supporting actors/co-stars, it definitely could be box office caliber.

It was in theaters for a little bit... at least at the budget theater in Minneapolis. I saw it there several months ago. It didn't very well though because there was no publicity for it.

reply

i agree, yes it definitely could have been a box office winner had it been promoted. there are too many good things about it to list....

plot, casting, etc

Mainstream Hollywood won't give Interracial-relationship type of films a chance! Due to the fact that it wouldn't get much buzz or even too much bad buzz. Many American's would not go to see this film as the lead woman is too different from them..sad but true! American's aren't that cultured, rarely knowing about other countries becuase their Social Studies books don't touch on Middle Eastern civilization and they only go over their own States history and U.S. history! Once again, sad! I know, I was in an American public school until my mom started homeschooling me because nothing was being taught!

reply

i agree it is sad, and yes, most americans are clueless, unenlightened, fairly stupid. hand em a macdonalds bag and a soda and a nascar ticket or whatever.... and they are happy.

When I was in high school, WORLD HISTORY was a requirement!
And, generalizations of well over 300 million people is just plain silly. Do you think that America became a world leader with everyone eating Big Macs?

reply

is it over 300 million now? d@mn.

who asked you what you took in high school?

let's not be racist, okay.

LTUM - I think you should actually learn HOT TO READ.
NOWHERE did I say a racist thing.
Both you guys claim Americans are stupid and eat BIG MACS.
I called you on it by stating a simple fact.

listen home girl, i do know HOT TO READ, okay.

you didn't call me at all, my phone hasn't rang all day.

also i said MOST americans, which qualifies my statement aside from a blanket statement. moreover, how americans are now, vs how they were when BECOMING a world power, refers to two divergent time periods. both could be true at once; they are not mutually exclusive.

aside from all that, i was joking in the first place, since i love america and my family fights in the wars, pays taxes, etc etc i was moreless making a joke, about britney spears types, but sorry you missed my pt.

i aint mad at ya.

Happily, there have been several films released in the US that enjoyed some commercial success with themes along the same lines as in this movie (Indian girl with white guy). Bend It Like Beckham (2003) grossed $32M US, and Bride and Prejudice (2005) grossed ~$7M US. Like this movie, they all included Mr. Kher in the role of father. Of the three leading ladies, my personal favorite is Shriya Saran, though all are quite talented.

"The Other End of the Line" is just now showing up on the US premium movie channels, and I happened on it quite by accident. I too believe it deserved a shot in theaters, and I think it might have slowly built a following through word-of-mouth like Bend It Like Beckham did.

I look forward to seeing further efforts by Ms. Saran.

So, if they had more money or talent to spend on cinematography, or a legitimate editor, ability to hire good writers or at least someone able to cut out the lame parts of the script, found well known named actors it would have been better? Well, that sounds good and all, but that isn't even close to what was offered. This is barely watchable even though I was curious enough to see it all.

For the other people on this thread who want to blame the country of America for not giving this movie a chance, maybe they need to reconsider their own biased ignorance. Bend it like Beckham was a great movie for all the reasons this one is a total failure.

reply

Yeah. The lack of budget, *beep* DP and editing and shaky script really hurt this movie. I was pleased with the leads and the Indian actors, but they needed pull in some big names for the supporting Amercian roles. Had more funding went into this film, it could have competed with Bend It Like Bendham.

reply

Totally agree. This is a good movie and with more money to spend (on more famous supporting American actors, better DP/editing work and cleaning up the script a little bit) it could have done good business. It's a very cute movid and def had potential.
