Gay Scenes or Kissing

Hi people,

Does anyone know if theres going to be gay scenes or kissing in this movie? I mean, the poem makes reference to Cassidy (his first lover) and to his sexual experiences, so I assume there will be gay scenes right? I mean, I can only hope so, because I am absolutely hooked with James Franco playing gay parts.

I would assume that at least one gay sex scene with Jon Prescott (who plays Neal Cassidy ) ...and maybe a few kissy scenes with Todd Rotondi ( who plays Jack kerouac)

The "character" of Peter Orlovsky is also featured in the film, as per the imdb, and, altho mostly straight, he was perhaps the most important lover relationship Ginsberg had. So, that could be the source of some smoochin', too.

I'm not super into Ginsberg's writing, but I do like Howl. However, Kadish (Kaddish?) is the poem that gets me. I saw Ginserg read it -- very uncerimoniously, actually, he was just sitting at some kitchen table in what looked like some plain NYC apartment -- in a documentary on Ginsberg years ago, and it was a really moving scene. I hope this film will find a way to address this poem, as well.

Not meaning to be rude, but, Franco's an awfully good-looking man to be playing Ginsberg, really. He's a good actor, tho, so he can pull it off anyway. Just a little bit weird and "Hollywood."

This movie is not a dramatization of the poem, but rather a depiction of the obscenity trial that Ginsburg went through after the publication of the poem.

reply

Yeah but I could see there being some just because it's about Ginsberg and that's who he was and what he was involved it. I dunno. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Which is really killing me; I'm thrilled about this movie.

The film IS being made by gay filmmakers, Franco is comfortable kissing guys and pro-gay, and they'd likely be showing scenes of his home life and with his friends in between trial scenes, so one can assume there might be some scenes between he and Peter (Aaron Tveit); and perhaps an artistic-type scene while the prosecutor is reading the poem (where there's a foggy, but bright, image of Ginsberg making love to Cassady--just speculation, don't place bets on this). Nothing is a guarantee, but there is hope!

FYC: Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker.

So was there? lol

lol, I'm curious as well.

Franco..definitely didn't look like the Franco we know in the stills..I'm looking forward to this film.

I saw Howl tonight and can confirm some things for those interested. Possible minor spoilers for those who like surprises though there is nothing explicit in the film involving the actors. There is some sexually explicit animation and dialogue in the film.

In one scene Neal Cassidy (Jon Prescott) wearing only boxer shorts and Allen Ginsberg (James Franco) are lying in bed together (black and white scene) and then embrace. Next morning they almost kiss in the kitchen, but just when you think they will Neal pushes Allen down to perform oral sex on him. He doesn't get to perform the dirty deed as Neal's girlfriend (or wife Carolyn Cassidy???) walks in on them.

The only other scene is a PG rated rolling around in bed between Peter Orlovsky (Aaron Tveit) & Allen Ginsberg (James Franco). Initially we (the audience) can't see anything because it is filmed from above and all we see is the back of Franco's head. However, they roll over slightly and then kiss, which lasts a few quick seconds.

The film was good however James Franco was miscast. He doesn't look anything like Ginsberg was a problem for me but undoubtedly this won't be for some viewers. Having said that though Franco was good and though I think Jay Baruchel would have been a better choice he may not have the acting chops to pull it off.

Whoopy-doo. Pink Floyd's THE WALL had sexually explicit animation. Those flowers were really going at it.

reply

yes. There is some kissing, but it's about the same as Milk had. Subtle and not what this movie is about. I watched it Thursday night.

reply

I don't know why it really matters; although, having said that, 99% of the hetero-erotic smooching in str8-themed movies seems to me gratuitous and has a tendency to make me want to reach for the Benadryl, so my view may be rather specialised...

reply

Of course it matters this is a gay movie! I am kind of disappointed there wasn't enough homosexuality or passion to this film based on the comments I just read.

reply

Though the film may be about a homosexual poet the focus is really more about free speech, from what I understand. That there were attempts to stop the poem from coming into this country (though it was written here) in the 1950's or 60's says more about who we really are now. There are still attempts by a fairly large segment of our population to restrict the freedoms of others based on their own little closed minds. I have always found it strange that so many people object the burning flags when they would support burning replicas of the Constitution. Forgive me, I seem to have forgotten which one of those two really represents America and what we supposedly stand for?

"Franco's an awfully good-looking man to be playing Ginsberg..."

You don't know the half of it. Franco's IMDB listing shows him being my height, and even spotting him an inch or so for the usual actors exaggeration, he's much taller than Ginsberg. When I remember Al (this is from the early 90's, mind you), I was always looking down at him. Respected him hugely, and my scribbler-school poetaster compatriots said he was always awesome, but in real life he was a quiet, nebbishy guy. Which made it all the more (unintentionally) funny when he would mumble his poems about boning boys to audiences of little old ladies.

reply

wow this is rather odd ..... when you bragged about knowing the real Ginsberg { but to you is **AL** }, all you talked about here was his height, his height and his height, as if his height is more important than the face, .....
It is quite OBVIOUS that >>>

"Franco's an awfully good-looking man to be playing Ginsberg..."

But then, we all **don't know the half of it**

lol, sooo funny ! Whatever the actual height of the real Ginsberg's, there must be thousands of actors with that particular height to choose from.
