I liked the movie, not so much the paintings

Interesting movie about madness, loneliness and social classes, with a great meditative folk soundtrack. But why are these paintings by Seraphine so highly regarded? I mean especially the early ones. The first painting that the German collector found next to a wall - that looked like a cheap wallpaper or table cloth. Why was he so impressed by this little scribble? I can understand the allure of her later paintings - I suppose, these could be quite impressive if experienced in full size. I would say the collector was the real genius for spotting the potential of this crazy lady.
