Promises

This movie to me is basically about promises , great expectations and disappointments . And what all of that could lead to , for special people with real gifts and passion like art .

You can't be any reckless with people like Séraphine .

Wow. You probably won't ever see this, but you hit the nail on the head. The first quarter of the film shows how despised this woman was while at the same time being impeccably disciplined. Uhde's continual recurring to her floor-washing and waxing as wastes of her time and talent built up her faith. Her religious faith was grandiose and an unknowing way to rationalize life's injustices to her. The one brief scene where she tells Uhde that she has eyes like other people and ears like other people is the one scene where she comes alive: and it's because of this man, whom she clearly loved.

She's deemed mad because another woman fondled her hair her first night in the asylum. This woman--if the screenplay is even 50% true to the artist's life--suffered beyond belief from soul-destroying loneliness and servility.

It was a great film but a very bleak one.
