Interesting Question About You IMDB people in general

I notice that the vast vast majority of films I see on here that star African Americans, including ones I love are totally torn apart by you people. I think it's safe to many of you are racist because many of them are real great movies, including this one.

reply

I have noticed it too. I think that this kind of movies get poor rating because of racism from the white part of society. And also some black people rate them low too, considering the vision of society showed in the movie to be offensive.

For me it was a good entertainment. A little bit humor, romance and family commitment with happy ending.

reply

I'm not naive enough to think that there isn't some racism going on here. Unfortunately we all know it sadly still exists. Apart from it, I feel there's a lack of understanding of the Black culture on behalf of Whites---and vice versa.

However, consider that even so called "mainstream" classics such as ON THE WATERFRONT (Brando, NETWORK (Faye Dunaway), and AS GOOD AS IT GETS (an Oscar for Nicholson) didn't fare much better than Aftrican American gems like DO THE RIGHT THING, WHEN THE LEVEE BROKE, and BOYZ 'N THE HOOD.

Even the GODFATHER, the top rated film, only got 9.1.

1. WHEN THE LEVEE BROKE (8.6)
2. WATERFRONT (8.3)
3. NETWORK (8.0)
4. IN COLD BLOOD (7.9)
5. BOYZ 'N THE HOOD (7.8)
6. AS GOOD AS IT GETS (7.8)
7. BATMAN (7.6)
8. ALEX HALEY'S "QUEEN" (7.5)

Again, I know racism exists. However, I still choose to believe that the majority of people is good.

reply

Racism exists, but Tyler Perry doesn't help it by making token, stereotypical moronic characters lie he does in his movies.

Even sadder, saying "you IMDB people" drags you back even farther. IMDB people are actors, people in the industry, and people that look up actors/directors/movies and use IMDB like it should be.

Your ignorance and anger pointed towards people that make reviews are unfounded.

FYI, I'm black. Tyler Perry is making movies that basically appeal to the black version of white trash.

I think there is something funny going on with 'black' movies on imdb. Not sure exactly what though because only the end result of below-the-mark ratings is visible, we can't know what's really leading up to it - even the demographics for the ratings don't really pinpoint one group as dragging down the rating.

FWIW I don't think this movie was a great one, I gave it 6, I would say it was mildly above average carried mostly on the shoulders of Angela Basset. I gave ATL an 8 though, I thought it was a great movie.

However, I could see why people would be disappointed with this movie, it seems to be promoted as a comedy when it is not, it's a feel-good drama. People expecting a comedy will be disappointed and may down rate it due to unmet expectations.

reply

Yeah, I won't challenge you there.

I'm just saying that there are indeed "black" features that have scored quite decently such as DO THE RIGHT THING (7.8), ROOTS (8.7), etc.

ATL?

EXACTLY
Movies like B*A*P*S, College Road Trip, Meet The Browns, Norbit, etc. are getting TOTALLY unfair treatment.I thought all these movies were good though:
B*A*P*S-9.2/10
College Road Trip-6.9/10
Meet The Browns-7.1/10
Norbit-6.5/10
So, I don't see what the deal is.

Do you understand the words that are comin' out of my mouth!?!

Some people need to remember that Class trumps Race every time. Just like Rich white people don't care about poor white people, Rich black people don't care about poor black people.

Honestly i'm gonna sound like a jerk but the fact is slavery is over with.. everyone has equal rights and far too many african americans still try and use "reverse racism" to try and get out of trouble.

Like the whole Black Professor, White cop deal. Here's a RICH black guy who is a well known professor and he goes on about being oppressed? he lost his cool and got in trouble that's it well no it isn't it.. He tried to ruin a mans life to get out of trouble.

People are people that's where it starts and begins. But rappers especially aren't helping anyone out.. they go around acting like criminal behavior is cool and yet they blame white people for keeping them down? imagine if rap stayed the way it was in the 80's.. as a fun rhyme oriented music.

Anyway.. lol about the movie, I've actually only seen the show but I'm not a big fan of loud comedy.. you know.. people who just scream with un-clever dialogue as a laugh track plays.

After reviewing the post. I do agree that that is some racism. I do agree that there is a clash of understanding different cultures. Also, I think one of the biggest beyond racism is expectation. If anybody has seen Meet The Browns stage play (highly successful) and seen the movie, they be disappointed because the movie does not follow the stage play. I had to catch myself because I was comparing Tyler's films with his plays. No! NO! no!.

Tyler's movies has their own uniqueness separate from the plays. Next time sitting at the movies, attempt to watch the movie without expectations. It will make a difference.

I agree. I'm not sure why Perry recycles the titles of his original plays for his movies, since there's so little similiarity between them. I would think that he's only setting his following up for disappointment!

I'm white and I went into the movie with no prejudices, other than a desire to see an entertaining story about city folks meeting their country kin. For the most part, I wasn't disappointed in that most of the Georgia folks were kind, with the exception of Vera who provided some antagonism. They were all interesting. It was getting really good when L.B. started talking about his daddy's women.

Where the movie fell apart was that it was sort of a trite love story that didn't develop the characters too well. And what was with the totally off-the-wall scene with the old folks in the car chase? Maybe it's an inside joke or something, but it was a jarring interlude.

My main problem here is that I've seen a lot of movies torn apart without cries of racism. But if a black film gets criticized, suddenly the critics are all Klan members. Honest dialog will never prevail if people say "you're picking on me because I'm black".

This is the first Tyler Perry movie I've seen, no reservations on my part, just looking for a good romantic comedy. It has nothing to do with the people being black, it just sucked as a film; very poor writing and over-the-top bad acting do not a good movie make. It just fell flat for the most part and the Vera and Leroy characters were just cringe-inducing. Yes, I've seen worse, but this was still pretty bad. It had a few really good moments, like the one guy talking about the pimp father during dinner (he ended up being my favorite character -- I don't remember for sure but I think he was Brenda's brother or half-brother or something?). Most of it was just not funny though, and they were clearly trying very hard to be funny, which just makes it all the more embarrassing when it doesn't work.

This. Pulling the race card because people don't like a movie... you really can't get more petty than that.

Well, it looks like none of Tyler Perry's movies get good ratings on IMDB. I don't know if it's a race thing as much as it is a case of "I don't get it". There are certain elements of his movies that only black folk will understand and find amusing. Mainly because most of us can relate to the characters. Many of us have an uncle that acts like Brown, for instance. Sure, it's exaggerated but that's what makes it funny. I think Tyler is a very gifted guy and I like all of his movies.

I like Martin Lawrence too, another one that gets hit pretty hard on IMDB. To each his own, I guess.
