I heard the character was based on Michael Manhardt. He was like Mr. Camp Hope but those were in the days before they got crazy. Mike was one of the first people to actually leave the Hopies and what's ironic (or coincidental) is that he left the group immediately after an incident that somehow involved George Van Buskirk. They are probably close friends because of this movie and I know he has been in Hollywood for years now so it all makes sense!
