What Christian Sect is this supposed to be?

The priest wears a collar and is called Father, and talk about Mass so Catholic right
but when they do Communion the first time the boy takes the wafer in his hand isn't that a Catholic no-no? Later a communion wafer is placed in a girls mouth this is correct right?
The guy who plays guitar wears a cross not a crucifix, I don't think anyone wears a crucifix but only crosses.
They do many things that are more likely to be done in Charismatic churches raising hands when praying do Catholics do this and the boy falls backward as if overcome with the Holy spirit, akin to the speaking in tongues done in Charismatic churches.
Can priests really ask permission to repeat what they hear in confession and shouldn't the priest specify what prayers ie a set number of Hail Marys and Our Fathers or is that just a movie thing?
Well I guess the book of Tobias is only in the Catholic Bible and the family is seen praying the Rosary.
So an offshoot Catholic Church?

This was a Catholic charismatic community, so we saw both the Catholic and the charismatic components.

Roman Catholics after Vatican II generally have had the option to receive the eucharist in the hand on or on the tongue.

On the Seal of Confession, according to Wikipedia, "There are limited cases where portions of a confession may be revealed to others, but always with the penitent's permission and always without actually revealing the penitent's identity."

The penance action though normally some set prayers does not have to be. It could be anything.

I know plenty of Catholic like that. They are called charismatic Catholics. According to wikipedia there are over 119 million worldwide. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Charismatic_Renewal

You're all invited to come check this stuff out for yourself. Register here for the NJ Catholic Charismatic Conference LOL: http://kfi-me.org/index.php?p=1_20_NJ-Catholic-Charismatic-Renewal-Conference
It's next weekend LOL

I am not sure what they are. Purgatory, and the sacraments of Confession and Communion are indeed Catholic, but the Catholic church no longer condemns masturbation. I've never heard of any book of Tobias. Charismatic Catholics follow the teachings of the Church.

Tobias is in the Catholic Bible. Its real name is Tobit, (Tobias is Tobit's son) and it is the only book in which the Angel Raphael appears. In the film's context, citing Tobit makes sense because part of the story is about a young woman who has a problem with Asmodeus who is like a sex pervert demon. She's tried to marry several times, but Asmodeus kills her husbands, I guess he wants her for himself. So this priest, by citing Tobit, is saying this demon inspires you to commit sexual sins.

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

just saw this movie the other day and came to Imdb to ask the same question. As a lifelong Catholic, I can tell you that the sect depicted in this movie is not "Roman Catholic". There are certain things that are similar to what our faith follows but most of it is a Hollywood bastardization of both Church teachings and practices. Perhaps the writers were taking poetic license in order to make a statement against the Church or someone was really involved in a rogue, heretic faction and decided to write a screenplay depicting that experience.

It seems the association that runs the real Camp Hope is not a rogue group...they are simply part of the Catholic Charismatic movement, found to be in compliance with Church teachings by the Diocesan Bishop. But the movie itself has only a scant resemblance to Roman Catholicism.

They're not normal Roman Catholics, that's for sure. We were raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools through the end of high school. We listened to rock music, went to concerts, read comic books, etc. We would have had cell phones if they had existed then.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

This movie is pretty much based on anti theistic misconceptions and ignorance.

Having seen this unusual movie I was tempted to wonder why Tommy did not refuse permission to the priest to inform his parents of what he had confessed? That said I rather liked the movie and give it 7 marks out of ten.

In the late 1970s and 1980s there were Marian based Charismatic Catholic "subcommunities" that operated as interiror sects within their own parishes sort of the way Opus Dei does now but without the same official approval. In fact, most of the Charasmatic Sects from that time have seen their star-power priests defrocked, not for sex abuse, but for preaching heresy and/or for refusing to allow or approve of the vatican II changes. In a strict, marian sect, the girls would likely all cover their heads and yes, masturbation would be considered a grave error. Also, they would likely NOT take communion in the hand since some of the now-excommunicated "prophets" of those movements condmened it.

The thing is, there are many brands of lunatic fringe Catholics from the Holocaust deniers to the Sede-Vacantists to the Blue Army and so on down the line. Usually they are small and community based, headed by a single charasmatic Deacon, Monk or Priest and they function bothin within their larger Parish and their own little subsect.

When I saw this film, it reminded me of some of the stuff my wife told me about one of her parents nearly getting sucked into one of these local sects. Eventually, the Bishop stepped in and closed it down because they were teaching non-canonical prophesy and non-scriptural stuff. These people looked to me like Folk Mass people all grown up with kids and the Marian involvement was implied very heavily with the kids all praying to the Virgin Mary, the rosary scenes and so forth. Marian subsects can be very end-times oriented.

Oh and by the way, the Sect People of Hope still EXISTS and plenty of Camp Hope survivors have spoken about it here. It was what has been described above. They chagned the camp name but they are now a recognized Faith Community as per their site PeopleofhopeDotCom:

The People of Hope, Inc. is a recognized 501(c)(3) organization and is listed in the Official Catholic Directory.

This aspect, among many, had me absolutely crazy while wathching this awful film: were they evangelical Christians, had the writers mixed the Protestant and Roman Catholic faiths together, and then I read Jesse Eisenberg sued to have his name removed from the credits of this bomb, so I knew everyone hated it.

reply

It's just a generic mishmash of a bunch of them. Someday we will discover whether religion is the cause...or the result...of insanity, then we might have a good shot at curing both!
