So... the Itallian chick

Why exactly did she sleep with Bishop? She and Stamps seemed to be hitting it off pretty well, and it was obvious that he was interested. When Bishop came on to her she looked pretty uncomfortable, yet she has sex with him and not Stamps?

Because Bishop talked dirty to her and aroused her curiosity in him, not to mention she was horny anyway (walking around topless in the yard) Stamps reacted too slow.

That was one of the odder things in the movie. I can't tell if she was more interested in having sex with a black man, or she just wanted to get laid. It became evident that she just wanted to get laid and Bad Boy Bishop got the action over the slow and respective Stamp.

Good guys do finish last.

I REALLY don't understand that bit of plotting either. It's really weird and out of touch with everything we see prior to it. Maybe it's a commentary on light vs dark and how light is perceived as more desirable that dark no matter how attractive, respect and classy darkie is? Spike Lee can be provocative at times.

I liked where they went with that.

Stamps was a man that treated everyone with respect - women especially. I'm sure he was very aware of her sexual desires as they were quite obvious but chose to do the 'right thing' and love her from a far. He knew nothing could come of a relationship with her.

His anger with Bishop was probably more out of frustration of his own 'ridged' standards when it comes to women right. He would never have wanted just a 'one night stand' with her anyway. He had the edge over Bishop the whole time but never used it.

The way she called out to Stamps before she was shot summed up everything. You could hear love, regret and anguish in her last last worlds 'Stamps....'.

I mentioned in another post my view on the situation. Being she was still married sleeping with Bishop was just fulfilling a sexual need and moving on but Stamps would have been different as he was interested not just in sex but a relationship which could not continue. I do think she had feelings for Stamps but could not act on it without betraying her husband whereas Bishop was someone to forget once they got their clothes back on.

Your interpretation is the best I've read on the matter.

I wish Spike Lee had shown it this way and not made her look so mystifying in her choices.

' Do the Right Thing'....

I see what you did there and I like it. :)

Honestly, I find it a bit weird (interracial relationship in 40s) and not surprsing at all since this is Spike Lee film.

reply

I think you missed the point that an interracial affair in the 40's was much more possible in Italy or Europe than in the Good Old USA.

That said ... I think this was one part of the film that could have been clipped in the quest to shorten it. Two hours and 40 minutes is pretty excessive.

Much more, but between Arabs, because they are Muslims - and not typically ebony people. I can't recall anyone in Italy who is black, except Mario Balotelli, but he wasn't even born there.

Stamps tried to treat it like a emotional love affair. Renata (and Bishop) knew they could be out of there at any minute, no one has time for games. She tried to give the booty to Stamp, but he was too slow on the uptake. Bishop did the right thing. Grab it while you can.
